And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/fashion\/2023\/feb\/12\/secondhand-clothes-uk-fashion-cheap-cool-kind-to-nature\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/fashion\/2023\/feb\/12\/secondhand-clothes-uk-fashion-cheap-cool-kind-to-nature\">Global Data<\/a> has forecast this growth to only continue, by 2026, the industry will have expanded by a further 67.5%. Second hand fashion is set to take 10% of global clothing sales.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"748\" src=\"https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/abby-spicer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23040\/2024\/05\/IMG_9255-1024x748.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-240\" style=\"width:806px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/abby-spicer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23040\/2024\/05\/IMG_9255-1024x748.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/abby-spicer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23040\/2024\/05\/IMG_9255-300x219.jpg 300w, https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/abby-spicer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23040\/2024\/05\/IMG_9255-768x561.jpg 768w, https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/abby-spicer\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23040\/2024\/05\/IMG_9255.jpg 1170w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Generation Z are reportedly at the forefront of this change, with <a href=\"https:\/\/ecommercedb.com\/insights\/secondhand-fashion-in-the-uk-attitudes-across-generations\/4550\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/ecommercedb.com\/insights\/secondhand-fashion-in-the-uk-attitudes-across-generations\/4550\">69% of the generation<\/a> revealing they\u2019ve bought second hand clothing in the past year, creating wardrobes where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thredup.com\/resale\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.thredup.com\/resale\">2 out of every 5 items are pre-owned<\/a>. Sustainable style is seemingly winning against fast fashion for the support of Generation Z\u2019s spending power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second-hand clothing industry has become a multi-billion pound marketplace with vintage stores proving popular on high streets and digital platforms such as eBay, Depop and Vinted fast becoming some of the most popular fashion apps.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vinted, an online marketplace for buying and selling second-hand items, saw its users double between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessofapps.com\/data\/vinted-statistics\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.businessofapps.com\/data\/vinted-statistics\/\">2019 and 2022<\/a>. From 30 million to 65 million users globally. In the UK alone, there are a reported 16 million Vinted users. That\u2019s nearly one quarter of the population buying and selling second hand goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/press-center-static.vinted.com\/Climate_Impact_Report_Summary_EN_2023_89b136c376.pdf\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/press-center-static.vinted.com\/Climate_Impact_Report_Summary_EN_2023_89b136c376.pdf\">Vinted<\/a> outlines their aim is to reduce emissions by keeping clothes in circulation for longer: \u201cThere\u2019s an entire international community making an impact by buying on Vinted instead of new. The rise of technology and digital apps which are easy to use means buying second-hand has become quite an easy click of the fingers.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt comes down to people&#8217;s values and their principles and how they want to accumulate items and clothing, while not being burdened with the issue of feeling that they&#8217;re not being very ethical at the same time.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Generation Z&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/later.com\/blog\/gen-z-social-media-usage\/#:~:text=\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/later.com\/blog\/gen-z-social-media-usage\/#:~:text=\">most loved app<\/a>, Tiktok, has seemingly hosted this rise with the hashtag \u2018vintage\u2019 boasting 4.8 million posts alone. She says:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSustainability is the future, as a content creator it\u2019s important to use my platform to promote sustainability and share the message that there are alternatives to fast fashion, especially on TikTok as there\u2019s so many young users.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fashion industry accounts for 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions, more than the aviation and shipping industries combined, making it the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2073-4441\/14\/7\/1073#:~:text=\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2073-4441\/14\/7\/1073#:~:text=\">second most polluting industry<\/a>. But as sustainability becomes more stylish, there has been a shift in fashion consumer practices.
