FaithWire Podcast Episode 1: Where Does Morality Come From?
The first ever episode of the FaithWire podcast brings with it a controversial dilemma
In our modern day and age, where the differences between right or wrong have never been broader, we often find ourselves in moral dilemmas, in which we try; through our subconscious moral compass; to support the “right side” or history, either by support in conflicts, sometimes a political candidate who we believe has the best alignment with our morals, or the select societal issues in which we think are most important based on our morality.
Morality/ Morals are something we all inherently possess, and use in our day to day life either to make decisions, or speak out and advocate for a particular cause.
However, Do we even know what morality as a definition is?
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, morality is: “behaviour conforming to moral law or accepted moral standards”.
So If we understand the origin of morality, that would give us all a much broader understanding of where we distinguish between right or wrong, essentially discovering the origin to our modern world.
Many believe morality comes from God, in the line of argument about a supreme being essentially “programming” inherent perceptions of what is right or wrong.
The other side of the coin is that through evolution, we essentially have inbuilt perceptions based on past experience of our ancestors and therefore, through experience and knowledge, complimented by understanding, our genealogy of morals is refined and processed through that, with the omission of any specific source.
Therefore, In today’s first episode of the FaithWire podcast, we will centre our discussion around the question: Does morality come from God? Or if it doesn’t, from where ?
Excellent article and podcast on morality, innate or developed.
