1) ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ by Simon & Garfunkel
“Your time has come to shine. All your dreams are on their way.“
This classic ballad is the perfect pick-me-up for when you’re feeling down. It’s a message from one friend to another saying “don’t worry, I’ll be there to catch you when you fall”, with the metaphor of a ‘bridge’ representing safety and security through troubled times.
2) ‘All of Our Yesterdays‘ by Mac Demarco
“Call me up when you need a shoulder to prop you up.”
With a similar message of reassurance and friendship, this mellow tune is a reminder not to live too much in the past. We’ve all made mistakes, but our yesterdays are gone and all that matters now is today and our hope for tomorrow.
3) ‘(Something Inside) So Strong‘ by Labi Siffre, Kevin. W Smith
“Something inside so strong and I know that I can make it, though you’re doing me wrong, so wrong.”
Inspired by the apartheid in South Africa, this song is an empowering ballad of social and political resistance. It can also be perceived in a more personal light, as a song about overcoming adversity and realising your own strength.
4) ‘Only You Know’ by Dion
“I know it’s not easy for you to start to believe again. And when the day comes don’t let yourself be deceived again.”
Another song written from the perspective of a reassuring friend, ‘Only You Know‘ is about facing personal troubles and not letting the bad times stop you from believing in a better future.
5) ‘The 345’ by Self Esteem
“Cause look, we made it this far, might as well carry on. Don’t have to stick to a plan, just living”
This song perfectly captures the feelings of anxiety and low self-esteem we may have felt throughout our lives. It’s a reminder to oneself that ‘I am worthy and important, and mustn’t give up when things get difficult’ (ironically by an artist called ‘Self Esteem’).
6) ‘Secrets From a Girl Who’s Seen it All’ by Lorde
“Everybody wants the best for you, but you’ve gotta want it for yourself, my love”
Singing to her younger self, Lorde uncovers everything she’s learned since releasing her first record. It’s an uplifting song about trusting yourself and facing life head-on despite all the ‘existential vertigo‘ it throws our way.
7) ‘Note to Self’ by Jake Bugg
“Cause things do happen and you know it’s not your fault. Don’t cover your wounds with the salt.”
In this song, Jake sings to a friend who lacks self-confidence, reminding her of her valuable qualities and encouraging her to write a kind note to herself.
8) ‘Three Little Birds’ by Bob Marley
“Don’t worry about a thing, cause every little thing is gonna be alright”
Possibly the most uplifting tune of all time! This classic earworm promotes positivity in the face of adversity.
9) ‘All Things Must Pass’ by George Harrison
“Daylight is good at arriving at the right time. It’s not always gonna be this grey…”
This poetic ballad, written by (arguably) the best member of The Beatles, is a reminder that everything is temporary and will eventually pass, grounding you in the moment and offering some well-needed perspective in times of anxiety.
10) ‘I’ll Be Your Mirror’ by The Velvet Underground
“When you think the night has seen your mind, that inside you’re twisted and unkind, let me stand to show that you are blind.”
I close my playlist with this well-known Velvet Underground tune as it’s a lovely little reminder that everyone is uniquely beautiful and significant.
