Newcastle University took part in ‘Nightline Awareness Week’ again this year, raising awareness for the anonymous helpline service. Here’s a quick overview of some events/giveaways that Newcastle’s Nightline representatives held across campus!
Nightline is a confidential, helpline service ran by students for students. The service enables students to speak anonymously to fellow students about any personal struggles or issues that might be keeping them up at night. Listening services are available between the hours of 8 pm-8 am for those who wish to speak to someone in person, and messaging services are open from 8 pm-2 am.
Nightline Awareness Week was held this year between the 19th- 25th of November. Newcastle University’s Nightline service providers hosted a few exciting events and giveaways to make their contribution and to help raise awareness.
On Tuesday 21st, Newcastle’s Nightline held a ‘Grab a Slice of Positivity’ event outside the Student Union to kick-start their awareness week. Students were invited to grab a slice of free pizza between 11 am- 1 pm and to learn more about the nightline helpline service (everyone knows that the only way to a student’s heart is by offering them free food!)
They also hosted an exciting giveaway collaboration with ‘The Pottery Experience’ in Jesmond, offering a free voucher for ‘Bring a Friend and Paint a Mug’ to students who fill out a 2-minute trivia survey. This giveaway closed on the 28th of November and the winner is yet to be announced!
An anonymous social media representative for Newcastle Univerisity’s Nightline said, “The aim of Nightline awareness week was to let more students know about the online instant message/calling services that Nightline provide so that every student knows they have a confidential, non-judgemental listening ear to reach out to if and when they need it.”
Nightline is an incredibly important service for vulnerable students, with volunteers working through the night to answer calls and provide a listening ear. The service doesn’t intend to advise or lecture students but instead allows them to talk openly and freely about any personal concerns or troubles without judgment.
Good news- Newcastle isn’t the only University that provides the Nightline service! The Nightline Association is a national organisation, so there’s likely a local service provided wherever you’re based in the UK.
If you want to learn more about the Nightline service, whether it be to use the service or to find out more about volunteering, you can visit their national service Instagram page @nightlineassociation (or for the Newcastle service visit @newcastlenightline).
