‘It’s how much to play sport at uni?!’

Picture this. You’ve just arrived at university and you’re at the fresher’s sports and societies fair. You are surrounded by exciting potential clubs to join only to find out that the sport you want to play could cost you up to £250. For a lot of students starting university, this is the reality.

Sports clubs and societies are a prominent part of university life, with clubs ranging from lacrosse to video game development, orchestra to jiu jitsu, classics to musical theatre. The range of societies offered means it comes as no surprise that a majority of the student population choose to partake.

Newcastle University has over 28,000 students and offer just over 200 student societies and 63 sports clubs to choose from. Typically, sports clubs are more expensive than societies, but the minimum cost for any society, sports included, is £5. There are exemptions to this at Newcastle however, as some societies with a volunteering or research focus having no cost.

When making a payment to join a society at Newcastle University, an £8 insurance cost is automatically added to the basket. This only occurs with the first society payment per year. It does not follow if a person joins multiple societies, only for the first one.

Within sports societies, additional costs can come in the form of kit, competition fees, and sports centre memberships. For a wide range of university sports clubs, the purchase of a sports centre membership is compulsory. This is £80, or £12 a month. If you are playing sport for the university teams, this has to be paid to cover the costs of training and playing on university managed or hired grounds.

I spoke to the Molly Marshall, club secretary of Newcastle University Ladies Hockey Club and Adam Genga, producer of Newcastle University Musical Medics to undercover some of the costs of joining and understand what these memberships actually cover.

The Newcastle University student union offers funding to academic based societies at the beginning of the academic year which enables students to a 6 week free trial, which many creative and sport based societies also partake in.

The student union also offers an £1000 grant to academic societies to encourage sign up from students. They encourage societies to pitch their ideas and will provide an amount, which allows these societies to put on events throughout the year.
