It is my final project for my MA in International Multimedia Journalism at Newcastle University. Everything here has been reported, filmed, produced and edited by me.

Why two cities

Migration usually reaches you as an argument. Numbers, targets, policy, a headline about a rule that changed.

It is lived as something much smaller and much sharper than that. A visa window that shrinks and takes your plans with it. A health system you have to learn from scratch, in a language you are still adjusting to. A plate of food that tastes like the place you left. A family who arrived decades ago and quietly turned this city into home.

That is the gap this project reports into. Not the debate, the life. Newcastle on one side. Mumbai, and India more widely, on the other. One reporter who has lived on both sides of it.

The stories

Reported straight from Newcastle, across a wide range of sectors. Immigration. Healthcare. Education. Food. And more to come.

Each story is built the same way. On the ground, in person, with the people actually living it, alongside experts who understand the system sitting behind them. Some are written. Some are filmed. All of them start with someone real.

Who it is for

Anyone who has made the move, or is thinking about it, or is watching someone they love make it. Students, families, people who arrived last month and people who arrived thirty years ago. And anyone in Newcastle who is curious about the lives being built alongside theirs.

About the reporter

I am Ameya Edvankar, a journalist completing my MA at Newcastle University, and before that eight years as an actor in India.
