Here is what you need to know about the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Defining Key Terms&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Who is a forcibly displaced person?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/calls-for-input\/human-rights-water-and-sanitation-forcibly-displaced-persons-need-humanitarian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UN<\/a>, a forcibly displaced person is someone &#8216;forced to move, within or across borders as a result of persecution, armed conflict, other situations of violence, or human rights violations&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a term encompassing both refugees and asylum seekers, along with others in need of international protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>While the terms &#8216;asylum seeker&#8217; and &#8216;refugee&#8217;&nbsp;are often used interchangeably,&nbsp;they are not one and the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Who is a refugee?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A refugee is someone forced to flee their own country and seek safety in another. They cannot return because of &#8216;feared persecution&nbsp;as a result of&nbsp;who they are, what they believe in or say, or because of&nbsp;armed conflict, violence or serious public disorder.&#8217; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/refugees\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/refugees\">UNHCR<\/a>)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, refugees are entitled to protection under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/about-unhcr\/who-we-are\/1951-refugee-convention\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/about-unhcr\/who-we-are\/1951-refugee-convention\">international law<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the UK, one must apply for asylum before being legally recognised as a refugee and gaining the rights associated with this status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Who is an asylum seeker?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An asylum seeker is a potential refugee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is someone seeking international protection who intends to apply for asylum or has already done so and is waiting for a decision to be made on their claim.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.refugeecouncil.org.uk\/information\/refugee-asylum-facts\/the-truth-about-asylum\/?gad_source=1&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjwouexBhAuEiwAtW_Zx5DJDqmRuB079-XpYgq98vQEsIKrCmTRhJgqDINQNYezFhtIh8X9NhoCoDEQAvD_BwE\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.refugeecouncil.org.uk\/information\/refugee-asylum-facts\/the-truth-about-asylum\/?gad_source=1&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjwouexBhAuEiwAtW_Zx5DJDqmRuB079-XpYgq98vQEsIKrCmTRhJgqDINQNYezFhtIh8X9NhoCoDEQAvD_BwE\">Anyone<\/a> has the right to seek asylum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asylum seekers do not have the same rights as refugees and in the UK, they are for example not permitted to work. While awaiting a decision, they must rely on the government for housing and financial support.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>\u201cNot all asylum-seekers will be found to be refugees, but all refugees were once asylum-seekers.\u201d &nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/asylum-seekers\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/asylum-seekers\">UNHCR<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">The United Kingdom&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The refugee crisis in the UK remains to be a pressing issue and in recent years, the country has experienced a surge in people seeking asylum within its borders.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/refugee-statistics\/insights\/explainers\/nowcasting-refugees-asylum-seekers.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/refugee-statistics\/insights\/explainers\/nowcasting-refugees-asylum-seekers.html\">increase<\/a> is due to the current happenings in the world, most notably due to the ongoing conflicts. The estimates indicate that by the end of 2023, the number of refugees has risen to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/refugee-statistics\/insights\/explainers\/nowcasting-refugees-asylum-seekers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">453,400<\/a> while the number of asylum seekers has decreased to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/refugee-statistics\/insights\/explainers\/nowcasting-refugees-asylum-seekers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">128,800<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite receiving <a href=\"https:\/\/commonslibrary.parliament.uk\/research-briefings\/sn01403\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/commonslibrary.parliament.uk\/research-briefings\/sn01403\/\">fewer asylum applications<\/a> than many EU countries, the UK still struggles, facing issues that further complicate the situation for asylum seekers and refugees. This includes a <a href=\"https:\/\/migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk\/resources\/briefings\/the-uks-asylum-backlog\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk\/resources\/briefings\/the-uks-asylum-backlog\/\">backlog<\/a> of asylum cases, leading to longer waiting times for the outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>The asylum process<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the UK, obtaining refugee status is often a&nbsp;complicated and lengthy process. It can take <a href=\"https:\/\/www.refugeecouncil.org.uk\/information\/refugee-asylum-facts\/the-truth-about-asylum\/?gad_source=1&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjwouexBhAuEiwAtW_Zx5DJDqmRuB079-XpYgq98vQEsIKrCmTRhJgqDINQNYezFhtIh8X9NhoCoDEQAvD_BwE\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.refugeecouncil.org.uk\/information\/refugee-asylum-facts\/the-truth-about-asylum\/?gad_source=1&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjwouexBhAuEiwAtW_Zx5DJDqmRuB079-XpYgq98vQEsIKrCmTRhJgqDINQNYezFhtIh8X9NhoCoDEQAvD_BwE\">from months to years<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/commonslibrary.parliament.uk\/research-briefings\/sn01403\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/commonslibrary.parliament.uk\/research-briefings\/sn01403\/\">not all<\/a> claims are successful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the claim is refused, the asylum seeker has the right to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/immigration-asylum-tribunal\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/immigration-asylum-tribunal\">appeal<\/a> against the decision.
