What’s this all about!
I am a student pursuing her masters in International Multimedia Journalism from Newcastle University. This website is a curation of the journalist portfolio I am creating as part of my final dissertation project.
I have attempted to employ various multimedia elements taught throughout my degree program, and all news reporting skills like souring interviews, finding different angles and voices around the same topic to make it multi-dimensional.
I am a foodie. I love all things food. And I believe truly that food is a universal language that that has the power to transcend divides and create a sense of belongingness for everybody. My second love is films, and I realised while news gathering and ideating for my story ideas how these two are inextricably linked. Thus was born my first story published on this website, on the harmonious marriage between food and film.
I also want to tap into the other, not so happy aspect of writing and reporting about food. It’s about how while right to food is a fundamental human right, what part of the world you are in deeply influences the quality of food. This also aligns with my interest in understanding how legal frameworks work in different nations and how that has a direct relation to people’s way of life. The same foods are sold with much regard to food security standards in developed nations by the same multinational corporations, while in poorer countries, that regard is completely missing. This duplicity, further highlighted by several new findings forms the second story on my website.
The third story, I believe, was simply meant to be. As the news of food related issues became rife at the Olympic village, it was clear I had to pen down my piece on the same.
The fourth piece is particularly heartwarming, as students living far from home share their experiences of sharing a food very dear to them with other friends who were trying it for the first time. They also talked about having a meal from a different culture, thanks to a friend and I have explored further how this simple act of eating together creates such a profound impact on people’s sense of belonging.
Finally, I got the privilege to interview the organiser of the North East Film festival to get to know more about if food or food organisations are playing any role in the initial stages of the production, and more about her vision for this incredible local project.
