Hi there, my name is Arwa, I’m a student journalist studying at Newcastle upon Tyne, but originally from Bradford. As a child, my mother made a point of making sure her children absorbed every bit of local culture, taking us to museums, vintage train stations and events that sparked every corner of interest. She is the reason I am so passionate about what I do at university. I think these places of culture (regardless of how niche or small they are) need to be preserved with conviction, and I am here to use everything within my power to do this with my journalism. My project aims to guide you, my fellow arts and culture enjoyers, into a journey of how to make the most out of cultural spots in Newcastle and the importance of the arts in the North East. I aim to make you feel the same passion I feel towards keeping arts and culture alive in Newcastle. I will be speaking to a variety of different people in and around Newcastle to find their opinions on spaces of art and cinema, exploring the importance of art in the education system and (not so) slightly criticising our government, gathering a diverse range of opinions from the general public, North East bloggers and people in the career of education. My aims are to shine a spotlight on areas of heritage that are dismissed by the local council and places that don’t garner much attention from the public these days. I will explore opinions on modern technologies and how technology can be used to conserve and not cold-shoulder culture. As someone who grew up surrounded by such places, it is key to me to preserve these places for our future generations. We tend to forget the important role these places play in our lives and how we view things. The arts have provided so much joy to the places we call home and it would be a shame to let them die from lack of funding and no participation.
