A Guide to Vintage Shopping in Edinburgh

From someone who probably spends more time on Vinted and Vestiaire than any other app on their phone.

Theres an undeniable sense of excitement that comes with vintage shopping. Its not just about buying clothes – it’s about the hunt. The thrill of sifting through endless racks, spotting a hidden gem buried between forgotten trends and questionable prints, and knowing that you have found something legitimately unique – that’s what makes vintage shopping so addictive.

It’s also about sustainability and individuality. In a generation where fast fashion and mass production is so rife, vintage offers an alternative of clothes rich in character, quality and a unique flare. Whether on the hunt for a timeless classic or a bold statement piece, Edinburgh’s vintage scene has it all.

Organised by location to give you the most seamless walking route through Edinburgh vintage scene [perfected over my 21 years as an Edinburgh resident,] this guide highlights the city’s must-visit shops and independent sellers – perfect for anyone ready to ditch throwaway, short-lived trends and build a wardrobe that is sustainable and chic.

1. Armstrongs – Teviot Place

📍 Address: 14 Teviot Pl, Edinburgh EH1 2QZ

⏰ Opening Hours: Mon–Thu: 10:00–17:30, Fri-Sat: 10:00-18:00, Sun: 12:00–18:00

Part of the renowned W. Armstorng & Son family, this smaller location situated near Edinburgh University is perfect if looking for a quick vintage fix. Known for their high-quality piece and authentic Scottish heritage, Armstorngs has been curating vintage treasures since 1840 – cementing its status as an institution in Edinburgh’s fashion scene.

Ive personally found that each Armstrong’s location has its own strengths,  and at Teviot place, I never struggle to find a good old pair of classic Levis jeans. Whether searching for perfectly worn in denim or retro polo shirts, its a great starting point for your vintage hunt.

The perfect pair of Levis cords!

What to look for:

  • Vintage Levis – from straight-leg classics to low waisted bell-bottoms, and don’t discard the men’s selection of denim!
  • Polo shirts – Great options for both men and women. I’ve picked up pieces here for myself and my boyfriend.
  • Accessories – Specifically, belts. Tucked away in the back corner, there’s always a solid collection of vintage belts, from studded statement pieces to classic leather designs.

Top tip: be prepared to dig through the denim rack – trust me, it’s worth it!

2. Armstrong’s – Grassmarket

📍 Address: 81-83 Grassmarket, Edinburgh EH1 2HJ

⏰ Opening Hours: Mon–Thu: 10:00–17:30, Fri–Sat: 10:00–18:00, Sun: 12:00–18:00

As the flagship store of W. Armstrong’s & Son, the Grassmarket location is an essential stop for any vintage lover. Set in the heart of Edinburgh’s old town, its not just a shop but an experience. With floor-to-ceiling racks and rooms jam-packed with treasures, this is the spot where I’s recommend carving out some serious browsing time.

The walk down from Teviot place is pretty spectacular too. As you turn onto Grassmarket, you’re greeted by picturesque views of Edinburgh Castle – making the whole experience feel even more magical!

While Teviot Place is great for a quick fix, Grassmarket offers more of a deep dive into vintage fashion. From gorgeous vintage Burberry trenches to perfect pink suede coats, this is jacket heaven – and trust me, you’ll always be spoiled for choice.

What to Look for:

  • Jackets and Coats – Whether it’s a statement fur coat (I found one here for £45 on sale and i’ll treasure it forever) or classic outwear in the form of a Burberry trench, the range is unmatched, here’s just a few jackets I have tried / purchased over the years;
  • Dresses – On my last visit, I spotted a stunning brown dress that I’ll feature below, and I think I might have to go back for it if it doesn’t leave my mind soon!

Top Tip: Allow extra time. This location is bigger and busier than the others, so don’t rush – the patience will pay off 🙂

3. TORN Vintage, Edinburgh

📍 Address: 11 West Port, Edinburgh EH1 2JA

⏰ Opening Hours: Mon–Sat: 11:00–18:30, Sun: 11:00 – 17:00

Just a two-minute walk from Armstrongs Grassmarket, TORN Vintage is a charming, carefully curated boutique run by the incredibly welcoming Vassia. Originally from Greece, Vassia turned her lockdown side hustle unto a thriving vintage store that’s become a favourite to many Edinburgh vintage lovers.

TORN vintage offers a curated selection that is perfect for anyone who doesn’t enjoy sifting through racks upon racks of vintage clothing. Instead, you’ll find handpicked gems that feel both timeless and wearable.

I’d especially recommend TORN for jackets – think gorgeous double breasted detailing, timeless trenches and the occasional fur trimmed wool coats. On my last visit, I spotted a gorgeous pair of vintage shoes (sadly not in my size), and Vassia mentioned that more vintage footwear would be hitting the rails soon – so keep an eye out!

The shoes in question ! 💔

What to look for:

  • Jackets – you’ll find a great range – from leather to wool, versatile enough for any season.
  • Vintage shoes – whether you’re after statement kitten heels or classic boots, Vassia’s picks are definitely worth browsing

Top tip: if your hesitant about styling or sizing, don’t hesitate to ask Vassia – her friendly advice make shopping here feel like browsing a friend’s wardrobe.

4. Armstrong’s – Cockburn Street

📍 Address: Craigs Close, 29 Cockburn St, Edinburgh EH1 1BN

⏰ Opening Hours: Mon–Thu: 10:00–17:30, Fri–Sat: 10:00–18:00, Sun: 12:00–18:00

If Teviot Place is great for denim and Grassmarket is the go-to for jackets, then Armstrong’s Cockburn Street is the middle ground—both in size and selection. Situated just off the Royal Mile, this store strikes a perfect balance between having a curated feel without losing that treasure-hunting charm.

What sets it apart? Boots, boots, boots. Seriously, if you’re after vintage footwear, this is your stop. From chucky leather bucke boots to crazy funky cowboy boots, it’s always well-stocked. Over the years, I’ve also had luck finding trench coats here—perfect for those classic, effortlessly chic looks.

What to look for:

  • Boots – leather, suede, heeled, flat—you name it, they’ve got it.
  • Trench coats – timeless and versatile, perfect for layering all year round.
  • Menswear gems – don’t skip the men’s section, its truly adorned with vintage t-shirts for dayssss

Top tip: With Cockburn Street being a tourist hotspot, it’s worth visiting earlier in the day to beat the crowds and get first dibs on the best pieces.

5. 5th Seasons Vintage

⏰ Opening Hours: Mon–Sat: 11:00–18:00, Sun: 12:00–17:00

I haven’t been able to visit 5th Season Vintage as much as I’d like since moving to Newcastle for University, but it’s truly a shop I look forward to visiting whenever I’m home. Before Lauranne and Kieran opened their Leith-based store, I used to count down the days until their pop-up events rolled around. And honestly, I don’t think I have ever left without buying something – the shop really is just too good.

Lauranne started 5th Season Vintage out of a love for fashion, sustainability, and curating pieces with character. What began as a small Depop store has grown into one of Edinburgh’s best-loved vintage gems. With their Depop store having a whopping 31 thousand followers, the shop’s reputation speaks for itself. its beautifully curated collection draws in both regulars and first timers alike.

And honestly, even if vintage isn’t your thing (which I would hope it would be if you’ve read this far!), the shops interior itself is enough to draw you in. The striking ceiling design, featuring retro-inspired swirls in shades of red, orange and mustard yellow, set the tone for a space that’s as unique as the pieces it houses.

  • Statement pieces – think bold coats, prints, and one-off vintage finds you’ll struggle to spot elsewhere
  • Coats – from fur-trimmed suede to bold orange leather trenches – there’s a coat in store that’s bound to tickle your fancy

  • Accessories – statement belts and sunglasses are things I’m always able to spot at 5th Season’s store
