For some people, this has meant relying on resources such as food banks, soup kitchens and other organisations to provide food for themselves and their families.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Food banks and similar support systems <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are currently over <a href=\"https:\/\/commonslibrary.parliament.uk\/research-briefings\/cbp-8585\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/commonslibrary.parliament.uk\/research-briefings\/cbp-8585\/\">2000 food banks available in the UK<\/a> alone, operating both independently and with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trusselltrust.org\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.trusselltrust.org\/\">The Trussell Trust<\/a>. Sadly, the demand for these organisations increase annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"644\" src=\"https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/cadence-boxall\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23047\/2023\/12\/DSC_2670-1024x644.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-144\" srcset=\"https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/cadence-boxall\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23047\/2023\/12\/DSC_2670-1024x644.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/cadence-boxall\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23047\/2023\/12\/DSC_2670-300x189.jpg 300w, https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/cadence-boxall\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23047\/2023\/12\/DSC_2670-768x483.jpg 768w, https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/cadence-boxall\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23047\/2023\/12\/DSC_2670-1536x965.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/cadence-boxall\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23047\/2023\/12\/DSC_2670-2048x1287.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/foodlifeline.org\/hunger-on-campus-satellite-food-banks\/\">Food Lifeline<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodaidnetwork.org.uk\/_files\/ugd\/6bacb0_f821c01a5a014338ac04a0bb656c8426.pdf\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.foodaidnetwork.org.uk\/_files\/ugd\/6bacb0_f821c01a5a014338ac04a0bb656c8426.pdf\">report<\/a> of independent food banks found that 89% of the organisations had seen an increase in demand from December 2021\/January 2022 to December 2022\/January 2023. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a staggering yet not overly surprising amount with more and more people being in need of financial help. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/382695\/uk-foodbank-users\/#:~:text=In%202022%2F23%20approximately%202.99%20million%20people%20used%20a,an%20increase%20when%20compared%20with%20the%20previous%20year.\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/382695\/uk-foodbank-users\/#:~:text=In%202022%2F23%20approximately%202.99%20million%20people%20used%20a,an%20increase%20when%20compared%20with%20the%20previous%20year.\">Statistics<\/a> also found that approximately 2.99million people used a foodbank in the UK between 2022\/23 which is a significant increase from the 2021\/22 financial year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People of the North East are disproportionately disadvantaged when it comes to food insecurity with 10% of households in the area being deemed as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/statistics\/food-statistics-pocketbook\/food-statistics-in-your-pocket#chart_4_5\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/statistics\/food-statistics-pocketbook\/food-statistics-in-your-pocket#chart_4_5\">&#8216;food insecure&#8217;<\/a> in 2022. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the highest amount for any region within England.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table aligncenter\"><table><tbody><tr><td>English Region<\/td><td>% of Households that were food insecure<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>North East<\/td><td>10<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>West Midlands<\/td><td>9<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>North West<\/td><td>8<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Yorkshire and the Humber<\/td><td>6<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>East Midlands<\/td><td>6<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>South East<\/td><td>6<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>East<\/td><td>5<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>London<\/td><td>5<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>South West<\/td><td>5<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Table showing &#8216;Household food security status by country\/region, FYE 2022. This meant that those from the poorest families would have suffered from this loss significantly more, with estimates that the poorest students in England were <a href=\"https:\/\/ifs.org.uk\/news\/cost-living-crisis-hit-students-harder-expected\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/ifs.org.uk\/news\/cost-living-crisis-hit-students-harder-expected\">\u00a31000 <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/commonslibrary.parliament.uk\/how-is-the-rising-cost-of-living-affecting-students\/#:~:text=According%20to%20the%20Office%20for%20National%20Statistics%20%28ONS%29%2C,rising%20costs%20of%20food%2C%20transport%2C%20rent%2C%20and%20energy.\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/ifs.org.uk\/news\/cost-living-crisis-hit-students-harder-expected\">worse<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/ifs.org.uk\/news\/cost-living-crisis-hit-students-harder-expected\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/ifs.org.uk\/news\/cost-living-crisis-hit-students-harder-expected\"> off<\/a> than the 2020\/21 academic year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other stats and facts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For many of us in the UK, saving money is a luxury with far too many living paycheck to paycheck. A 2018 &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fincap.org.uk\/en\/articles\/key-statistics-on-uk-financial-capability#:~:text=39%25%20of%20adults%20%2820.3%20million%29%20don%E2%80%99t%20feel%20confident,debt%2C%20and%20only%20around%20a%20third%20receive%20help.\">Financial Capability Survey<\/a>&#8216; found that 39% of adults in the UK don&#8217;t feel confident managing their money and 11.5million people in the UK have less than \u00a3100 in savings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div data-wp-interactive=\"core\/file\" class=\"wp-block-file\"><object data-wp-bind--hidden=\"!state.hasPdfPreview\" hidden class=\"wp-block-file__embed\" data=\"https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/cadence-boxall\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23047\/2023\/12\/Financial-wellbeing-capability-UK-adults-poverty-debt-saving-numeracy-infographic-1.pdf\" type=\"application\/pdf\" style=\"width:100%;height:380px\" aria-label=\"Embed of Financial-wellbeing-capability-UK-adults-poverty-debt-saving-numeracy-infographic-1.\"><\/object><a id=\"wp-block-file--media-bc56aeac-9cf2-4c32-9a77-b1a7dee74c70\" href=\"https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/cadence-boxall\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23047\/2023\/12\/Financial-wellbeing-capability-UK-adults-poverty-debt-saving-numeracy-infographic-1.pdf\">Financial-wellbeing-capability-UK-adults-poverty-debt-saving-numeracy-infographic-1<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/cadence-boxall\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23047\/2023\/12\/Financial-wellbeing-capability-UK-adults-poverty-debt-saving-numeracy-infographic-1.pdf\" class=\"wp-block-file__button wp-element-button\" download aria-describedby=\"wp-block-file--media-bc56aeac-9cf2-4c32-9a77-b1a7dee74c70\">Download<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Credit: Financial Capability <\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This does not differ when it comes to students dealing with student finances as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/educationandchildcare\/bulletins\/costoflivingandhighereducationstudentsengland\/30januaryto13february2023\">ONS<\/a> found there are 68% of students receiving student loans and 58% of these students said it did not cover their living costs. 25% said it covered the costs but only just. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This shows that the struggles with finances is unlikely due to a lack of budgeting or mindfulness but more to do with a lack of finances available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We know the North East are struggling. There are a multitude of stats and facts that show too many people in the North need help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luckily, there are resources widely available due to organisations such as The Peoples Kitchen, The Trussell Trust and independent food banks who would all appreciate your donations.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizensadvice.org.uk\/debt-and-money\/cost-of-living\/get-help-with-the-cost-of-living\/\"> Citizens advice<\/a> also offer guidance to those struggling who don&#8217;t know where to look for help.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The current cost of living crisis in the UK has made spending on everyday items such as food, gas and petrol incredibly limited for many households.
