{"id":92,"date":"2024-05-25T22:52:28","date_gmt":"2024-05-25T21:52:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/ciaran-ayre\/?p=92"},"modified":"2024-05-25T22:52:29","modified_gmt":"2024-05-25T21:52:29","slug":"geordie-council-budgets-can-newcastle-pull-itself-out-of-a-current-economic-slump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/ciaran-ayre\/2024\/05\/25\/geordie-council-budgets-can-newcastle-pull-itself-out-of-a-current-economic-slump\/","title":{"rendered":"Geordie Council Budgets: Can Newcastle Pull Itself out of a Current Economic Slump?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>With austerity measures continuing to take effect in the UK, how are local authority(s) combatting this in their outlined budget for the 24\/25 Tax Year?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More importantly, does this fall short to the corrosive and volatile nature of the Cost-of-living crisis rife across the UK?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the current political climate, Cost of living remains a prevalent issue where \u2018[&#8230;] As of January 2024, almost half of UK households were still reporting that their cost of living had increased in the last month\u2019 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/topics\/6500\/the-british-economy\/#topicOverview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Statista<\/a>, 2024).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Newcastle\u2019s city council have had to make painful yet crucial decisions to sustain the local economy in line with Government movements towards further austerity measures.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, the outlined budget for the next tax year is committed to community needs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The official <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newcastle.gov.uk\/\">city council website<\/a> states: <\/p>\n<cite>\u2018Councillors in Newcastle have set a budget for 2024-25 to support communities in the cost-of-living crisis\u2019.&nbsp;<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>More on the budget can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/newcastle.gov.uk\/citylife-news\/newcastle-city-council-sets-budget-2024-25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Newcastle City Council has been under Labour majority control since 2011. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Considering this, how are the local councillors sticking with the ethos of being &#8216;for the people&#8217;?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below is a video showcasing the projects underway in Newcastle that will help Geordies and the local economy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Local Mayoral elections, which took place on May 2, proved quite successful for the current UK opposition party, Labour.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They retained their majority of seats within Newcastle&#8217;s local authority \u2013 45 out of a possible 78.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With this considered alongside Labour party leader Starmer\u2019s promises of economic growth as a \u2018first step\u2019, do local budget commitments reflect similar aims?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is important here &#8211; in my opinion &#8211; is how the City Council will achieve economic growth not only for the current generation locally&#8230;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;but to provide a hopeful future for upcoming generations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most recent data on children (under 16) in absolute low-income families within Newcastle show a downward trend, yet remain above the overall average of the UK even pre-pandemic:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">Newcastle\u2019s Figures \u2013 2018\/19 (23%);
