It’s the night before your dreamy getaway, and you haven’t even made an attempt to open your suitcase. Either that, or clothes are spilling from the case, and it physically will not shut. Whichever camp you fall into, it is stressful! But, with these tips and tricks, your packing is going to get a whole lot more relaxing.

1. Start Early

I know… this sounds extremely obvious and patronising. But leaving things until the last minute really does slow you down, instead of optimising your packing time. Start to think about what you want to take around a week before you travel, giving you time to go shopping if you are missing any essentials. Listing out what you want to pack takes away the stressful element of packing and ensures you won’t forget the most important bits. This also helps you avoid overpacking, eventually saving you money when you don’t have to pay for the overweight luggage charge! Making a list can really help to clarify exactly what you need and don’t need – 77.1% of UK packers say making a list makes them less likely to forget things, so it works!

2. Use Packing Cubes

These things are honestly like the carpetbag in Mary Poppins! I tend to categorise each packing cube by items; such as tops, underwear, swimwear, trousers and so on. Packing cubes compress your clothes in your suitcase, saving space but keeping your clothes unwrinkled, and ready to wear on your holiday! You can also buy packing cubes in multiple different sizes that perfectly slot into your suitcase alongside each other. They make unpacking at the other end really simple, as you just pull the cube out, rather than sifting through bundles of clothes. You can even get pretty coloured versions of packing cubes, which obviously makes packing more fun…

Top tip: Get someone to check your packing and make suggestions! Pack outfits, not options

We are all guilty of throwing random items of clothing into our suitcase, purely because they look nice on their own, rather than considering how they would work within an outfit. This just takes up room in your suitcase and time on the other end as you stress about not having outfits (despite the abundance of clothes!). By planning specific outfits, I find that it saves me the time-consuming decision-making process in the morning and therefore allows me more time to explore wherever I am. As evidenced by a survey conducted by ‘Radical Storage’, 40% of people come home with clothes they haven’t even worn! Whilst you will most likely always have to buy something new for your holiday, packing outfits can definitely limit this spending. Consider the activities you will be partaking in on your trip, and pack accordingly and appropriately for these! On holiday you can be whoever you want to be, leave the constraints of your everyday life behind, and fashion can help you embrace this. When I spoke to Sophie Jarvis, head of travel on Newcastle University’s newspaper ‘The Courier’, she recommended packing lightly and “only bringing things you will actually use on a daily basis. You don’t need 4 pairs of jeans!”

4. Get a luggage scale

Picture the scene: I am standing at the front door with my bulging suitcase, praying it isn’t overweight, when all of a sudden my mum comes running down the stairs and announces that she has found the luggage scale… To nobody’s surprise, it was 3 kg overweight, and it was a last-minute panic to move things over to my hand luggage, resulting in the worst shoulder pain known to man from my handbag. Had I known about this elusive luggage scale whilst I was packing, however, this feeling of anxiety and dread would have never occurred. Another tip is to make sure your scale is calibrated properly, is on a flat surface, and is fitted with new batteries. Many of my friends have been given a wrong reading and subsequently been charged for a heavy bag due to the scale not being calibrated, so remember to do it! Remember to double-check the weight limit for the airline you fly with, as many differ in their allowance. For example, British Airways and EasyJet allow 23 kg, Ryanair is 20 kg, and Emirates is 32 kg depending on the route you are flying.

So, those are my personal top tips for suitcase packing and just a way to alleviate the stress from a task that not many people enjoy.
