Fancy a dip in the sea?
Just because Newcastle is most known for its enthusiasm for drinking doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the rest it has to offer. Here are 10 things you can do, without risking a hangover.

- The Dispensary
Located just by St. James’ Park, The Dispensary has plenty of delicious food and drink options that won’t break the bank on a student budget. For less than a tenner, you can indulge in a sweet brunch treat or a full English breakfast, depending on what mood you’re in. As part of their recent festive menu this winter, you can try their brand new ‘Eton Mess Pancake Special’ paired with a delicious ‘White peppermint hot chocolate’ to get yourself in the Christmas spirit! Since it’s just a short walk from the centre, it’s a great value and accessible food spot, whether it’s a hangover cure or a wholesome outing with your housemates.

2. Grainger Market
One of Newcastle’s highlights, I would argue, is Grainger Market. There is something for absolutely everyone here. They have a well-stocked fruit and vegetable stall, which is incredible value for the freshers trying to compensate for their unhinged alcohol intake. You have to visit my personal favourite food stall, Acropolis, if you’re a fan of Greek food. They have a store in West Jesmond too, for all those non-fresher students who are too lazy to take themselves to town. Not only do they serve a wide range of cultured foods, but you can shop sustainably too if you’re into vintage fashion.

3. Newcastle Christmas Markets
With December quickly approaching, it’s time to pay the Christmas market a visit! A staple during the winter, even as a student, in Newcastle if you ask me. Treat yourself to an arguably overpriced (but mouth-watering) hot chocolate with warm churros and you can even pick up some sentimental handmade gifts to take back home to your mum. A great afternoon outing if you find yourself going insane from reading too many scholarly articles in the library and fancy a unique sweet treat.

4. Olive and Bean
The best post-lecture spot to try if you’re in need of an iced coffee and a late lunch. Only a short walk away from Newcastle University campus, you can grab an Oreo brownie to-go if you’re in a rush, and it won’t disappear. 5. St James’ Park Stadium
I’m more than aware that a large selection of university students in Newcastle are avid football fans and often even support Newcastle United. So, I suppose it would be rude not to mention St James’ Park. On non-match days, they offer the opportunity to grab a tour of the stadium grounds for just £20 on their website, which is ideal if it’s something you’d like to tick off your bucket list. Home to many historical sports moments and memorable performances from Sam Fender, it could even make the perfect Christmas gift this year for someone special.

6. Tynemouth Market
For a more chilled and leisurely day out you can hop on the Metro, for about 25 minutes, until you arrive at Tynemouth. Here you will find the underrated Tynemouth Market every Saturday and Sunday! From baked goods to antique goods and homemade jewellery, they have something for everyone so it’s always worth a trip. Although it should be noted that it’s best enjoyed throughout summer, but if you wrap up warm, you’ll be just fine.

7. Tynemouth Beach
If you can’t bring yourself to leave Tynemouth just yet after you’ve finished exploring the market, it also has a stunning beach just a 5-minute walk away from the Metro station. No matter how icy the weather is, no beach day is complete without devouring a portion of fish and chips, so have some while you admire the picturesque sea view.

8. Theatre Royal
If, unlike me, you’re actually capable of sticking to your student budget, then this one might be for you. Despite the fact that it may be slightly out of your everyday budget, if you can spare some change, you could see a classic performance at Theatre Royal. Check out their upcoming shows here. Why don’t you relive the childhood nostalgia of watching a pantomime? Even if you aren’t huge on theatre…

9. The Pottery Experience
If you aren’t afraid to get your hands dirty, then give The Pottery Experience a visit. Located in West Jesmond, you have the option to either paint or make and paint pottery, so I guess it depends on how adventurous you’re willing to be. Remember, it doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s a memorable experience to enjoy with friends or loved ones, so go and check it out! Remember to pay them a visit in Jesmond on Sunday, December 3rd from 10am-3pm for their “Festive Makers Market”. You can buy tickets in advance here.

10. Jesmond Dene
After a long (yet somehow still unproductive) day on campus, why not take a stroll through the gorgeous Jesmond Dene? It makes for an aesthetic walk, with a gorgeous waterfall and stunning views. If you’re also an animal lover, you’ll enjoy this part. They have ‘Pet’s Corner’, which is open from 11am until 3pm currently, where you can peek at some animals and birds as a pit stop on your stroll. What a perfect way to end the day.
