A new online community for North East film enthusiasts has launched, connecting members through a dedicated Discord server.

The North East Film Club offers bi-weekly film selections chosen by members, group discussions, and a space for members to share their social media pages and movie memes.

Members anonymously submit films every two weeks, which the group members each then vote on. The winning film becomes the featured movie for the next two weeks, after which members discuss it openly.

The Discord also includes a general chat for talking about new releases, physical media pickups, and the latest film news. Members can share film content, engage in friendly debate, and connect with other local movie enthusiasts.

The group has been active for around six to seven weeks and currently has 14 members from across the North East.

So far, the winning films have included The Thing (1982), Mother! (2017), and The King of Comedy (1982), with the current watch being the 1922 silent film Nosferatu.

The creator of the Discord server, Luke Trickster, 28, spends his days working his retail job, but his true passion lies in cinema. Luke said that the member feedback so far has been positive.

“My goal hasn’t been to be the biggest or the group with the most members. People in the group have appreciated that everyone is local and can share events, such as special screenings at Tyneside or outdoor showings of films.”

Member Daniel Badowski, 20, said “I think it’s great to bring people together. I never realised there was such a big film community in the North East.”

The group also includes a few bots you can use on Discord specific to film such as an optional feed that posts people’s Letterboxd reviews as they make them.

The club is looking to grow, with plans for more events and special activities down the line. New members are welcome to join and become part of the North East’s growing film community.

“Most members have been added in via TikTok, but a couple have joined after meeting people in cinemas who they got on with,” said Luke.

The film club has had discussions of meet-ups ranging from a night out to renting out a private screen. There are currently plans to run a Christmas quiz in the coming weeks on Discord where there will be prizes for the winners.

For anyone looking to join a like-minded community of cinephiles, the North East Film Club is welcoming new members through their Discord group. It’s a great place to get involved with plans for more events and a growing roster of film enthusiasts.
