Images supplied by: Grace Boyle&nbsp;(Granted permission to use)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A second-year student was forced to move out of private rented housing in Jesmond due to uninhabitable living conditions putting her in hospital.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">On October 26 Grace Boyle was given a day\u2019s notice to move into an Airbnb out of Jesmond after submitting more than 80 maintenance requests for her HMO house of six in West Jesmond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Journalism, Media, and Cultural Student claimed she developed a form of pneumonia due to housing conditions. Boyle said: \u201cIt\u2019s having a lot of long-term effects. She said: \u201cI could not move, I could not breathe, I could not sleep. The agents offered the house of six \u00a3100, providing them with \u00a316.66 each for living with 80 maintenance requests.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/england.shelter.org.uk\/housing_advice\/repairs\/is_your_home_fit_for_habitation\">Shelter<\/a>&nbsp;states landlords have responsibilities to ensure their properties are fit for people to live in, with poor conditions described as \u2018so bad\u2019 that it\u2019s not reasonable for you to live there.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Hannah Cooper, Research and Campaigns Manager at Citizens Advice explained: \u201ceverybody deserves to be in a home which is warm, safe and that is able to meet their needs. We are currently facing lots and lots of housing issues.\u201d Housing is one of top five issues for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizensadvice.org.uk\/\">Citizens Advice<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIt\u2019s not something you expect as a uni student, estate agents know how to rip off students\u201d \u2013 Grace Boyle&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/damp-and-mould-understanding-and-addressing-the-health-risks-for-rented-housing-providers\/understanding-and-addressing-the-health-risks-of-damp-and-mould-in-the-home--2\">Gov.UK<\/a>&nbsp;data estimates number of homes in England with damp and mould range between 962,000 homes to 6.5 million households. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/common-health-questions\/lifestyle\/can-damp-and-mould-affect-my-health\/\">NHS<\/a>&nbsp;states damp and mould increases the chance of respiratory problems, respiratory infections, allergies or asthma.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The tenants as a result have been moved into an Airbnb for an estimated two weeks. It has currently been three weeks with the six being split up to opposite sides of Newcastle 30 minutes away from university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Boyle said: \u201cI just want to live in a safe dry house, I think I deserve at least hot water, heating, not the feeling that someone is going to break in every five minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Cooper explained: \u201chousing is a human right. Boyle states the bills are not worth the house she is paying for. Her house is due to rise next year to \u00a3175 a week.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hepi.ac.uk\/2023\/10\/26\/student-rents-now-swallow-up-virtually-all-of-the-of-the-average-maintenance-loan-as-market-reaches-crisis-point-in-affordability\/\">Unipol and HEPI<\/a>&nbsp;(Higher Education Policy Institute and The Home of Student Housing) found rent for students has increased by almost 15% in the past two years. Save The Student found&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.savethestudent.org\/accommodation\/student-housing-problems.html\">41%<\/a>&nbsp;students do not view their student housing as good value for money.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Boyle added: \u201cI do not want to be investing my very low funds into a house I don\u2019t like.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">It is advised to contact&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizensadvice.org.uk\/housing\/renting-privately\/during-your-tenancy\/dealing-with-repairs\/\">Citizens Advice Newcastle<\/a>&nbsp;if tenants are not sure what repairs landlords must do but it must be fit for human habitation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Want more content like this?
