In an industry dominated by fast fashion brands and trends, what does it mean to have a timeless wardrobe? A timeless wardrobe is curated with ‘basic’ items of clothing that you can pair with anything. The intention is to encourage people to spend more money on more durable items of clothing. The clothing in a timeless wardrobe is usually of high sustainable quality, so it will last longer and save you money in the long run as you will not have to constantly replace damaged clothing.
What is included in a timeless wardrobe…?
A timeless wardrobe is usually made up of basic items that match anything. The idea is that they are not seen as ‘trendy’ so do not go out of fashion. Items can include, block-coloured t-shirts, denim jeans, hoodies and sweatshirts that are one colour, shoes and any other items that will pair with anything.
What to look out for….
Take the time to research brands that have sustainable morals throughout their entire production process.
TIP: look out for greenwashing (brands that say they are sustainable but are not – this is usually a technique to hide how unsustainable they are.)
This will then guarantee high-quality clothing that is likely to last long. Sustainable brands are likely to be more expensive due to their sustainable process. However, you are saving money in the long run as you are not replacing items every few months.
TIPS:
- Dress for your size: There is nothing worse than spending money on clothes that don’t fit. If you are going to start building your timeless wardrobe, know your size for certain items and make sure they fit properly. The whole point is that you don’t have to replace these clothes for a while…! (Levi’s jeans are good as they offer so many different sizes and styles, I’m sure there is one for you) (Carhartt have good trousers and jackets for men)

2. Invest a little bit more money (if you can): Buying cheaper clothes does not save you money as the quality is so poor. If you are able, spending money on slightly higher quality pieces will save you money in the long run. This is because the quality is higher, and you will not have to constantly replace it. (Nobody’s child knitwear, jackets, and trousers) (Patagonia jackets) (Pangaia loungewear)

3. Buy clothes that fit any season: It is sensible to invest in clothing that can be worn throughout the seasons. While it is understandable that you cannot wear shorts in winter, it Is best to buy clothes that can be worn all year round. Examples of this can be: Jeans (Levi’s jeans), Shirts (Nobody’s Child), T-Shirts (Boden, Carhartt), Shoes (Veja).

My Favourites:
I decided to try and build my own timeless wardrobe. I started by clearing out my wardrobe and donating all the clothes that I no longer wore to charity. I then took the time to research some sustainable brands that I could invest in. I found that Nobody’s Child was the most versatile for what I wanted as they had pretty much everything I needed. I bought some long and short sleeve tops, jeans, a jacket, and some accessories. This allowed me to make a start with my timeless wardrobe as I had 4-5 staple pieces that I know will match anything. I felt it was really important to take the time to research brands that actually have ethical values. I, as a student, want to try and make small changes where I can and I felt this was a good place to start.
Some other brands that I love are:
- Tea and Tequila – Jewellery and clothes.
- Pangaia – Loungewear.
- Levis – Jeans
- Boden – pretty much anything.
- I also love Etsy for small business, they do really good handmade jewellery and knitwear.
