As an avid sports fan, and someone who has spent their life around all kinds of sports and activities, I recognise that such exercise can be extremely beneficial to everyone, and in several ways, be it physically, mentally or beyond. Studying in Newcastle, you do not have to look far to appreciate the connection with sport, with Newcastle United boasting over 52,000 loyal fans on a weekly basis. A city obsessed with sport, it quickly became clear to me the profound impact that sport has on people’s lives in the North East. I grew up in Hackney, North London, a place where similarly to this part of the country, sport is at the centre of people’s lives, and often serves as an escape, or an enhancement to the everyday. I see sport as capable of transforming one’s life, and as a journalism student, I aim to create articles that emphasise the positive impact that sport has on people and their local area, reporting on initiatives and instances whereby the people of Newcastle and beyond into the rest of the North East, have experienced a productive change to their lives, or the place they live, through the vehicle of sport.
My journalism will be of interest to everyone in the North East, and I hope that people will use it to identify, and appreciate the progression that sport is inciting. I will reach sports fans, but I hope to extend further than that, as the topics I intend to cover will be of interest to every individual, and the North East as a collective community. My stories will detail how sport is being used to improve people’s lives as well progressing entire institutions and communities in the area, giving people an almost personal connection to the changes and therefore, hopefully, peaking interest.
