{"id":242,"date":"2025-12-04T13:11:50","date_gmt":"2025-12-04T13:11:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/katy-woods\/?p=242"},"modified":"2025-12-12T11:43:43","modified_gmt":"2025-12-12T11:43:43","slug":"newcastle-university-students-shocked-at-train-fare-rise-this-christmas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/katy-woods\/2025\/12\/04\/newcastle-university-students-shocked-at-train-fare-rise-this-christmas\/","title":{"rendered":"Newcastle University students shocked at train fare rise this Christmas"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Newcastle University students are frustrated at the train fare increase from last Christmas to now, calling the rise &#8220;infuriating&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Newcastle University student, Hester Hutchinson, said that she was \u201creally angry&nbsp;when I realised how much my train tickets&nbsp;had gone up in price on re-booking.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;infuriating that I have no other&nbsp;option&nbsp;than to pay more.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Travelling on December 16 last year, her&nbsp;CrossCountry&nbsp;train to&nbsp;Birmingham New Street&nbsp;cost \u00a326.50, while if she were to travel on the same date and time this year, it would cost around \u00a340, totalling a rise of 51% (tickets purchased via Trainline).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dataportal.orr.gov.uk\/statistics\/finance\/rail-fares\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Office of Rail and Road<\/a>, train fares in Great Britain have increased by 5.1% in 2025,&nbsp;meaning it will cost every&nbsp;university student&nbsp;travelling by train&nbsp;more to get home this Christmas than last.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rise will also&nbsp;not be softened by&nbsp;the&nbsp;rail fare&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/first-rail-freeze-in-30-years-to-ease-the-cost-of-living\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">freeze<\/a> either,&nbsp;announced in November\u2019s budget,&nbsp;since it&nbsp;does not come into action until&nbsp;2026.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/katy-woods\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25138\/2025\/12\/IMG_1466-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/katy-woods\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25138\/2025\/12\/IMG_1466-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/katy-woods\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25138\/2025\/12\/IMG_1466-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/katy-woods\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25138\/2025\/12\/IMG_1466-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/katy-woods\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25138\/2025\/12\/IMG_1466-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/katy-woods\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25138\/2025\/12\/IMG_1466-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Newcastle Central train station; Image credit: Katy Woods<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>So, if train fares&nbsp;aren\u2019t&nbsp;frozen,&nbsp;what kind of increases are we looking at?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rhys Hunt,&nbsp;a Newcastle University student,&nbsp;said that he&nbsp;travelled using&nbsp;a&nbsp;splitsave&nbsp;train&nbsp;ticket&nbsp;from Newcastle to Hebden Bridge, via York, on December 15&nbsp;2024.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a 16-25 railcard (which gets the user 33% off), it&nbsp;cost him \u00a314.90&nbsp;to travel from Newcastle to York and \u00a313.95 to travel from York to Hebden Bridge, totalling \u00a328.85 for his journey overall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If he were to travel on&nbsp;the same date and time&nbsp;this year, it&nbsp;would cost&nbsp;at least&nbsp;\u00a317.10&nbsp;to travel from Newcastle to York and \u00a38.55 to travel from York to Hebden Bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> This would cost \u00a325.65 in total, via&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lner.co.uk\/buy-tickets\/ticket-selection\/?ocrs=NCL&amp;onlc=7728&amp;od=Newcastle&amp;dcrs=YRK&amp;dnlc=8263&amp;dd=York&amp;JourneyType=single&amp;outda=n&amp;ret=n&amp;outy=2025&amp;outm=12&amp;outd=15&amp;outh=11&amp;outmi=27&amp;nad=1&amp;nch=0&amp;rc=YNG&amp;rcn=1&amp;pc=&amp;pat=&amp;tto=n&amp;initialOutboundDateTime=2025-12-15T13%3A00%3A00.000%2B00%3A00&amp;initialInboundDateTime=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LNER<\/a> then&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.northernrailway.co.uk\/?gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=12068198793&amp;gbraid=0AAAAAD9aMf3YJfcYZx8zRN1PEyT6xVS7T&amp;gclid=CjwKCAiA3L_JBhAlEiwAlcWO51UrtyOCr0I3m-QCy9iMCjfQw8bF9ffBnZ_1W232-k5VygEeJwjbfhoCIAYQAvD_BwE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Northern Rail<\/a>&nbsp;(tickets&nbsp;purchased&nbsp;via Trainline).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The overall decrease can be attributed to the decrease in price to get from York to Hebden Bridge, via Northern Rail, however the price to get from Newcastle to York has still increased, via LNER.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heather&nbsp;Hewis, also a Newcastle University student,&nbsp;used a 16-25 railcard to&nbsp;purchase&nbsp;her Lumo train ticket home to Stevenage last&nbsp;Christmas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She travelled on December 14 last year, at a price of \u00a339.44 (ticket purchased via Trainline).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If she&nbsp;were&nbsp;to travel on the same date this year it would cost up to \u00a348.85 (via&nbsp;the Lumo website).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s annoying, I understand everything is going up in price but [this] increase in a year is excessive&#8230;&#8221;<\/p><cite>Heather Hewis, Newcastle University student<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This year she is travelling on December 13, costing her \u00a350.54 (via Trainline). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked about the increase, she said that she &#8220;understand[s] everything is going up in price, but [this] increase in a year seems excessive, especially when I booked this ticket so far in advance compared to last year.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the fact that Heather booked her train tickets on November 15 this year, a week earlier than she did last year, the price of her train ticket still increased &#8220;excessively.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s&nbsp;how these increases look:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"727\" height=\"434\" src=\"https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/katy-woods\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25138\/2025\/12\/Screenshot-2025-12-04-12.59.34.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/katy-woods\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25138\/2025\/12\/Screenshot-2025-12-04-12.59.34.png 727w, https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/katy-woods\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25138\/2025\/12\/Screenshot-2025-12-04-12.59.34-300x179.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 727px) 100vw, 727px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Graph showing changes in train fare prices from 2024 to 2025. <br>*<em>Note&nbsp;\u2013 2025 prices are based off prices searched on December 2, prices can be subject to change dependent on&nbsp;date&nbsp;purchased.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>It can be noted that the train fare from Newcastle to Hebden Bridge has decreased since 2024, however all other train prices in the table have increased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When contacted,&nbsp;Lumo&nbsp;said that&nbsp;December is \u201camongst the most popular travel dates in the year, so people do book incredibly early and sign up for ticket alerts when they go on sale.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They therefore &#8220;always recommend booking early for the best value train fares.&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LNER said that &#8220;the Christmas period is always a popular time to travel&#8221; and advised customers &#8220;to plan ahead where possible and book their tickets in advance for best value fares.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They also said that &#8220;a new timetable, which is the biggest transformation on the East Coast Main Line for more than a decade, is being introduced from 14 December 2025. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalrail.co.uk\/tickets-railcards-and-offers\/saving-money\/save-money-on-your-train-ticket\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Rail<\/a>&nbsp;website&nbsp;has some pointers.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It said that to get the cheapest prices, you should book tickets in advance, which you can do from 12 weeks before you travel right up until 10 minutes before.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They also&nbsp;advise to travel&nbsp;at off-peak times. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a large city&nbsp;such as Newcastle, off-peak times start at 9.30am&nbsp;and tend to end around 4pm&nbsp;on&nbsp;weekdays and&nbsp;run&nbsp;all day on the weekends.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another tactic can be to buy a railcard. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A 16-25 railcard is advertised by National Rail as the best choice for university students.
