Hi there!
My name is Keira Gratton, and I am currently studying Journalism, Media, and Culture at Newcastle University. As part of a second-year university project I will be posting eco-journalism content on this website from October through to December 2024. If you’re an environmentalist, a student like me, or even just green-curious, stick around to see what I post here!
Growing up in the rural Midlands you quickly becoming intimate with a lot of nature. Some of the few summer pastimes in our villages are roaming the wheat fields with your siblings and hoarding conkers until they mould.

Holidaying exclusively in the UK until my mid-teens, our family instead took more trips than I can remember across the countryside. Somewhere between these places, the exotic seas of my favourite nature documentaries, and sunsets at home, a love for our landscapes was instilled in little me. I was a rapt viewer of any and all fishing programmes (still my go-to hungover watch) and kept a stack of encyclopedias next to my bed.
Meshing that with my love of creative writing and videography, I’ve landed on environmental journalism for this project.
The Eco Echo site will hopefully be a novel space for north-eastern viewers to learn a little more about the stunning ecosystem right on their doorsteps. I hope my content will be a learning experience for season climate-activists and new greenies alike. With Northumberland National Park and the coastline a stone’s throw away, it shouldn’t prove too challenging to impress.
We’ll be looking at biodiversity on the Tynemouth coastline, evolving green spaces in Newcastle city-centre, current climate-action and more. You can expect to see a mixture of multimedia news reports, features, opinion pieces and video. Through these articles, I hope to make environmentalism a little more accessible to viewers, and remind you why we must stay vigilant in calls for better climate policies and less pollution.
I hope you can check out some of my content on the pages above, or my social media linked on this page.
Happy viewing!
