{"id":224,"date":"2025-04-30T10:04:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-30T09:04:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/keira-gratton\/?p=224"},"modified":"2025-05-08T07:16:15","modified_gmt":"2025-05-08T06:16:15","slug":"why-are-newcastle-university-accommodation-prices-skyrocketing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/keira-gratton\/2025\/04\/30\/why-are-newcastle-university-accommodation-prices-skyrocketing\/","title":{"rendered":"Why are Newcastle University accommodation prices skyrocketing?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-340de7a97866407c397bbc2b810abe5c\" style=\"color:#787878e3;font-size:0.7rem;line-height:1.4\">^ Newcastle University picket line<br>Image credit: Keira Gratton<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/keira-gratton\/2025\/05\/02\/completely-ridiculous-and-overpriced-newcastle-student-accommodation-costs-set-to-rise-again\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Rent up 29% per week<\/span><\/a>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c627ym2qj4no\">lecturers on the picket lines<\/a> <\/span>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itv.com\/news\/tyne-tees\/2024-09-28\/newcastle-university-faces-35m-blackhole-as-international-students-decline\" class=\"broken_link\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Newcastle University \u00a335 million behind budget<\/span><\/a>\u2026 Amid a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/news\/uk-sector-not-crying-wolf-over-funding-crisis-says-mapstone\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">higher education (HE) funding crisis<\/span><\/a>, how much do the students affected really know about why university costs are rising nationwide?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color has-large-font-size wp-elements-cd5142f4d0d3fbb050968cbe99b9da1b\" style=\"color:#109417\"><strong>Why are Unis underfunded?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In September 2024 Newcastle Vice Chancellor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itv.com\/news\/tyne-tees\/2024-09-28\/newcastle-university-faces-35m-blackhole-as-international-students-decline\" class=\"broken_link\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Chris Day revealed a \u00a335 million shortfall in the University budget<\/span><\/a>, which they reportedly aim to correct with \u201cdifficult choices and prioritisation\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similar stories are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-wales-64511655\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">unfolding in universities like Cardiff<\/span> <\/a>and<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c2d3n6ekd3ko\">Durham<\/a><\/span>, where staff cuts and rising accommodation fees are being stretched to cover financial deficits and loans. There are three main reasons why universities across England are having to increase profits and cut costs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\" style=\"padding-top:0;padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--70);padding-bottom:0;padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--70)\">1: <strong>Tuition fee cap<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/newsround\/68370090\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Dubbed by news sites a \u2018cost of living crisis\u2019<\/span><\/a>, England is currently facing an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/economy\/inflationandpriceindices\/timeseries\/l55o\/mm23\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">inflated 3.7% Retail Price Index<\/span><\/a>, meaning that the prices of food and energy are steadily rising. As a result, the costs of other goods and minimum wage are also being boosted, making employing large numbers of staff and affording resources costly for once prosperous universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, since the 2017 rise of tuition fees to \u00a39,250 per year, the cap on tuition prices has meant that universities\u2019 income was kept artificially low in the face of inflating costs. New <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cy0gjyj4979o\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">legislature has now increased tuition fees by \u00a3285<\/span><\/a> for the 2025 academic year. However, if fees had risen in line with inflation, <em>The Week<\/em> reports that they should have<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/theweek.com\/education\/uk-universities-why-higher-education-is-in-crisis\">reached highs of \u00a315,000 today<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\" style=\"margin-right:0;margin-left:0;padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--70);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--70)\">2: <strong>Loss of international student<\/strong>s<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emeritus Professor Sir Peter Scott &#8211; who was previously the Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Leeds, and a board member of the Higher Education Funding Council for England \u2013 told us that &#8221; international students have, in effect, been treated as a \u2018cash cow\u2019 by universities for years\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike capped domestic tuition, universities have always charged international students much higher prices. For example, for a Journalism, Media and Culture BA at Newcastle,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/undergraduate\/degrees\/p500\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"> an international student would pay \u00a323,800 annually<\/span><\/a>, around 2.5x more than a domestic pupil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New barriers to entry like <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/11\/11\/uk-universities-face-funding-crunch-brexit-plunge-international-student-numbers\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Brexit changes to visa requirements<\/span><\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/thepienews.com\/uk-out-of-erasmus-announces-new-turing-scheme-as-replacement\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">loss of the Erasmus+ international student funding programme<\/span><\/a>, and the \u201ctoxic debate around immigration\u201d \u2013 said Scott &#8211; have deterred international students from studying in England, slashing their <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hepi.ac.uk\/2023\/05\/16\/international-students-boost-uk-economy-by-41-9-billion\/\">\u00a341.9 million contribution to English higher education<\/a>.<\/span> To learn more about the barriers putting international students off studying in England, watch our TikTok <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/7jS4YU_dXDA\">here<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\" style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--70);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--70)\">3: <strong>Inaccurate projections?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst the gradual loss of governmental funding is the face of budgeting issues, Scott said that behind the scenes universities may have <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/education-66786377\">overestimated international student numbers<\/a> <\/span>&#8211; \u201cmany had made unrealistic assumptions that the number of international students would just go on increasing\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Signs sporting slogans like &#8220;CHRIS DAY ATE MY CAREER&#8221; on the Newcastle University and College Union (UCU) picket lines point to overboiling anger at higher management; figures like the Vice Chancellor are being blamed for not predicting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itv.com\/news\/tyne-tees\/2024-09-28\/newcastle-university-faces-35m-blackhole-as-international-students-decline\" class=\"broken_link\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">&#8220;the impact of a shortfall in international student recruitment this year&#8221;<\/span><\/a>, which Day said were the cause of the staff cuts. Lecturers and students alike on the Newcastle UCU picket line discussed how these unfair cuts will affect us all&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"UCU Strike Vox Pops\" width=\"810\" height=\"456\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/u_8osxiAKKs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color has-large-font-size wp-elements-d03d6b24727b500469aaca3f32511652\" style=\"color:#109417\"><strong>What\u2019s the solution?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the increased media attention on higher education funding and strikes, few parties agree on strategies to reform university earnings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Newcastle UCU\u2019s Instagram page, they point out that Vice Chancellor Chris Day <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DHtxJFNoQXa\/?img_index=1\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">earns a lecturer&#8217;s annual wage in 21.7 days<\/span><\/a>, suggesting that management should accept wage cuts themselves to cover losses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Others, like Sir Peter Scott, radically \u201csupport free higher education\u201d, pointing to the domestic student focussed HE models in Scotland and Ireland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further popular remodellings include advocating for more government subsidy \u2013 \u201cuniversities need to work harder to persuade politicians that they \u2026 should have at least as much priority as defence\u201d said Scott \u2013, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/education\/2023\/may\/21\/labours-top-team-pushes-starmer-to-replace-tuition-fees-with-graduate-tax\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">lifelong tax on graduates<\/span><\/a>, or even <a href=\"https:\/\/capx.co\/a-graduate-tax-but-for-employers\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">a tax on employing workers with university degrees<\/span><\/a>.
