Formula Student, a prestigious student engineering competition, is quickly becoming a catalyst for empowering the next generation of engineers. A competition that celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2023, Formula Student is global, attracting participants from many corners of the globe. It is a competition where teams of university students conceptualise, design, build, and race small-scale formula-style racing cars and compete with other universities to see who comes out victorious.

Competition Judging
There are three different classifications of competition at Formula Student, Formula Student Class, Concept Class and Formula Student AI. The Formula Student class is the main event, usually participated by over a hundred different teams, competing with the cars they designed and built themselves. These cars are then judged based on six different categories, having to pass a mandatory inspection before being deemed road-worthy or safe enough to compete in certain events. The Concept Class is reserved for teams that have a plan for a project but do not have a readily available Formula Student Class car. These teams are judged on their design, business presentation and budget of production. The final class is the Formula Student AI class which was introduced only recently in 2019. This class is reserved for teams that produce AI-driven cars.
The cars are judged by industry specialists on the following criteria:
Static events
- Engineering design (150 points)
- Cost & Manufacturing (115 points)
- Business presentation (115 points)
- Lap Time Simulation (20 points)
- Technical inspection (comprising 6 tests): safety, chassis, noise, tilt, brake, and tech (no points)
Dynamic events
- Skidpad (figure of 8) (75 points)
- 1 km autocross/sprint (100 points)
- 75 m acceleration (75 points)
- 22 km endurance (250 points) and fuel economy (100 points)
The winner of the event is the team with the highest number of points out of a maximum of 1000. (Wikipedia)
