Newcastle University recently announced its \u00a3250m partnership with Unite Students to offer undergraduate students 2,000 beds in a newly rebuilt Castle Leazes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The accommodation is set to open again in 2027\/28 and will provide students with fully equipped en-suites with 6 to 10 bedrooms in each self-catered flat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nick Collins, Executive Director of Finance at Newcastle University, said: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201c[Morriss House in Nottingham]<\/a> is probably as close to what Castle Leazes will eventually look like once reopened.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The new build will rely heavily on design features from Unite Students, including a shared amenity space for socialising and studying, a gym, and a secure reception for entry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a public press release, Joe Lister, Unite Students Chief Executive Officer, said:  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe partnership will provide further support to Newcastle University in meeting their accommodation needs at a time of real housing shortage, so that they can focus on providing a world-class experience for their students.\u201d<\/em> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Collins revealed the new Castle Leazes accommodation blocks will not be priced at the current Castle Leazes range, but instead priced towards the top end of the price bracket. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Existing accommodation offered by Newcastle University starts at \u00a3178.50 per week. Available at Park View,<\/a> the newest and most expensive accommodation, which opened in 2018 replacing old accommodation on Richardson Road. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This decision remains controversial as many students share their worries over Newcastle University no longer offering catered, affordable options for accommodation following the closure and remodeling of Castle Leazes.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stage Three Journalism, Media and Culture student, Rhys James, said:  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cI think realistically it was a very unsafe place to live, but it\u2019s the only cheap option available, so what\u2019s the alternative for others when that\u2019s all they can afford? That\u2019s what I\u2019m worried about.\u201d<\/em> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

On average, rent prices have increased in Castle Leazes by \u00a320 this year. Elo Quitmann reveals her rent costs her \u00a3135 per week in the 2022\/23 academic year. Whereas this year the rent for the same accommodation block costs \u00a3155 per week. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another university student, Adriana Newbury, said: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI loved Castle Leazes, I thought it was such a good experience. Maybe I have a more unique perspective, but I\u2019ve never paid more than I had to.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

But much of this was due to the social elements she experienced in the catered halls: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen they rebuild Leazes they need catering options, especially for the social element. As a fresher it was the perfect way to make friends and socialise with other blocks.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Newcastle University said they are looking into pricing existing accommodation at an affordable entry point by suppressing prices and refusing to inflate existing options. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently prices start at \u00a3129.50 per week for Windsor Terrace<\/a>, the cheapest accommodation offered by Newcastle University for undergraduate students. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
