Based on a survey conducted by ADHD UK<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In September, the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nottsapc.nhs.uk\/media\/vwxjkaxa\/adhd-medicines-supply-advice.pdf\"> Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC)<\/a> attributed the nationwide shortage in the UK to &#8220;heightened global demand and challenges in manufacturing.&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The department anticipated that the disruption would \u201clikely be resolved\u201d sometime between October and December.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pharmacist and ADHD specialist Salma Ali suggests that a growing awareness of ADHD may play a role in contributing to the rise in diagnosis, placing a strain on the supply chain.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere had always been patients suffering with ADHD symptoms, but with the situation during the pandemic and increased awareness of ADHD online, these patients started reaching out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Although&nbsp;manufacturers had predicted an increase in demand for ADHD drugs, they had no way of predicting how significant that increase would be.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite this, many remain concerned over the lack of information and foreseen support provided by the government.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"794\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/marina-snyder\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23039\/2024\/05\/unnamed-28-794x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-382\" style=\"width:232px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/marina-snyder\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23039\/2024\/05\/unnamed-28-794x1024.jpg 794w, https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/marina-snyder\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23039\/2024\/05\/unnamed-28-233x300.jpg 233w, https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/marina-snyder\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23039\/2024\/05\/unnamed-28-768x991.jpg 768w, https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/marina-snyder\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23039\/2024\/05\/unnamed-28.jpg 994w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 794px) 100vw, 794px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Dr. Tom Nicholson, Neurodiversity specialist consultant and mental health lecturer<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Neurodiversity specialist consultant and mental health lecturer, Tom Nicholson said: \u201cIf this was any other condition, I would\u2019ve expected to see significantly more of an outcry than what we\u2019ve seen.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople who are taking a medication that we know reduces suicide, gambling, addiction, and that improves outcomes in so many ways was essentially stopped overnight. It\u2019s now been six months, and there are still people who have been unable to get that medication.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among people affected by the shortage is Jay Barber, who is struggling with ADHD symptoms as a university student. She said \u201cThe shortage has affected me more than I thought it would.\u00a0It affects focus, motivation and time management and as a university student I have a dissertation and essays due, but without the medication it&#8217;s so much harder.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"734\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/marina-snyder\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23039\/2024\/05\/unnamed-29-734x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-383\" style=\"width:515px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/marina-snyder\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23039\/2024\/05\/unnamed-29-734x1024.jpg 734w, https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/marina-snyder\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23039\/2024\/05\/unnamed-29-215x300.jpg 215w, https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/marina-snyder\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23039\/2024\/05\/unnamed-29-768x1071.jpg 768w, https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/marina-snyder\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23039\/2024\/05\/unnamed-29.jpg 959w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 734px) 100vw, 734px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">22 year old Jay Barber who has been impacted by the medication shortage<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>She added that she also struggled with attendance and everyday routines such as when it came to getting out of bed and having to get ready in the morning<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked about how the government has handled the shortage she said &#8220;I wish there was more communication about what is happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;All we\u2019ve been told is about an increase in demand, which is all very vague.
