{"id":31,"date":"2025-08-13T21:27:52","date_gmt":"2025-08-13T20:27:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/martine-arno\/?p=31"},"modified":"2025-08-16T01:12:22","modified_gmt":"2025-08-16T00:12:22","slug":"the-attack-that-never-ended-tarjeis-fight-against-hate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/journalists.org.uk\/martine-arno\/2025\/08\/13\/the-attack-that-never-ended-tarjeis-fight-against-hate\/","title":{"rendered":"The attack that never ended: Tarjei\u2019s fight against hate"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\"><strong>Fourteen years after surviving Norway\u2019s deadliest terror attack, Tarjei Jensen Bech has stepped away from top political roles \u2014 not because his passion faded, but because the hatred that drove the attack never stopped. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/event\/Oslo-and-Utoya-attacks-of-2011\">On 22 July 2011, a far-right terrorist <\/a>opened fire on the Labour Party youth summer camp on Ut\u00f8ya, killing 69 people. Nineteen-year-old Tarjei Jensen Bech ran through the forest, warning others, before being shot in the leg as he tried to escape into the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">In the months and years after, he was determined not to let the attacker win. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201cIt showed how important politics is \u2014 many didn\u2019t get to continue because they were killed. Politics suddenly became a matter of life and death,\u201d Bech says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From bullets to inbox threats<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">He rose through the Labour Party ranks, eventually serving as deputy county mayor in Troms and Finnmark. Walking around afraid isn\u2019t living \u2014 it\u2019s surviving. And I realised I couldn\u2019t keep doing politics like that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">Bech believes many fellow survivors have made the same calculation he did. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201cSome just can\u2019t face the harassment. They\u2019ve seen what happens to those of us who stayed. And many have seen how the political debate has hardened. A lot of Breivik\u2019s ideas have been normalised. That\u2019s frightening \u2014 especially for those who have been threatened themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">He describes a digital space increasingly hostile to young activists. \u201cOn TikTok, hateful and racist comments flood the sections. Some just disappear quietly,\u201d Sandvold says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">AUF works to support members who face threats, helping with police reports, legal follow-up, and emotional support. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hate as an extension of the attack<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">Psychologist and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nkvts.no\/english\/employee\/glad-kristin-alve\/\">NKVTS researcher<\/a> Kristin Alve Glad has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nkvts.no\/english\/project\/the-terror-attack-experience-and-reactions-among-utoya-survivors\/\">followed survivors <\/a>for more than a decade. They have the intended effect \u2014 inducing fear and political withdrawal, which in turn hinders recovery, engagement, and democratic debate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">She explains that sometimes it\u2019s full disengagement; other times it\u2019s self-censorship \u2014 avoiding certain topics, not wearing political symbols, even skipping events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Democracy under pressure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">For Bech, the danger isn\u2019t just personal. \u201cIf only those with the hardest skin stay \u2014 the ones who don\u2019t disappears \u2014 that\u2019s not healthy for democracy,\u201d he says, warning that harassment risks driving out the most empathetic and reflective voices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">Sandvold agrees: \u201cWe can\u2019t afford to let the loudest and most hateful voices push others out. That\u2019s how extremism wins without another shot being fired.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">Glad adds that this is not accidental \u2014 hate and threats are often designed to induce withdrawal. If enough people pull back, she warns, democratic debate shrinks and becomes less representative, leaving space for more extreme voices to dominate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201cOur biggest fear is not the extremists themselves, but that extremism becomes normalised. Your presence itself can help improve the climate.
