The Media Awards were hosted by Meg Howe, who has been the Student Media Officer for this academic year. The night started with an emotional speech from Meg, thanking everyone who has contributed to Student Media throughout the year.

There are three main branches of Student Media:
The Courier – the student newspaper published both online and in print
NSR – Newcastle Student Radio (live radio and podcasts)
NUTV – Newcastle University TV (live streaming and YouTube channel)
There were 21 award categories across the three branches, plus a bonus category for ‘Courier Bingo’, which recognised any writers who wrote for all 14 sections of The Courier this academic year.
For each category, a shortlist was released approximately one week prior, and all shortlisted nominees were invited to the event. On the night, there were awards presented to both the runner up and winner of each category. All successful nominees were invited to give a short speech on stage.
Friends and family were also in attendance to support their loved ones.

The most prestigious award of the night was the Monica Doughty award, for an individual who has contributed significantly across Student Media as a whole. The award is named after Newcastle University alumni Monica Doughty, who contributed to The Courier for many years. The winner of this award was Katie Siddall, presented by Monica’s granddaughter.
