Advice for 1st Year Students

We asked current MCH students for advice that they would give to new students starting their MCH degree in September. Remember you can also seek advice from your peer mentor, as well as your personal tutor.

Matthew Pescod – Journalism, Media and Culture

The best advice I’d give to new students is to not stress over stories if they don’t come to fruition straight away. Get used to interviewees not responding and replying! But understand that there are people out there who do want to speak to you – use social media, search for contact details and explore your own area (or patch) and you’ll find stories in no time!

Katie Alice Galvin- Keay – Media, Communication and Cultural Studies

The advice I would give for new first years is don’t be afraid to talk to people and make friends. Everyone else probably also feels nervous and there is so much you can get to know about other people. I’d also say to make use of your personal tutor if you are struggling and don’t be afraid to contact your lecturers if you’re having a hard time understanding an assignment. Work hard but remember to use first year to adjust to potentially being away from home in a new city.

Rhys James – Journalism, Media, and Culture

My advice would be to not overthink every decision and just try things. The worst that will happen is you won’t enjoy something and you won’t have to do it ever again.

Kate Riddick – Joint Honours Geography and Media

Don’t be afraid to talk to people in lectures and seminars as it’s a great way to make friends! Also, remember your lecturers are always there to help so make use of office hours etc and asking questions!!

Toby Schofield – Film and Media

Make the most of freshers week. Do the recommended reading as you go along. Don’t skip practical workshops for film. First year doesn’t count* so enjoy yourself but try not to fall behind. Meal prep and shopping lists are also good!

*Editor’s note: You still need to pass first year to progress to second year

Roseanna Leconte – Journalism, Media, and Culture

My first bit of advice would be to take part in as much as you can! Make the absolute most of all the extra-curricular activities this university has to offer, such as sports clubs, societies, and student media. Secondly, don’t take first year too seriously! Try your best but also allow yourself to make mistakes.

Libby Griffiths – Journalism, Media and Culture

Put yourself out there! Don’t sit alone in lectures, speak up in seminars, grab a coffee with a stranger, take part in events and activities during freshers, join a society (there’s a media and journalism society!!), take advantage of what’s available to you.

Do you have any advice for freshers? Has this advice helped you? Share your thoughts in the comments!
