On Thursday the 28th<\/sup> of November, alongside the CHS society<\/a> (Combined Honours), the baking society<\/a> partnered up and created an intersocial baking event to raise money for charity, filling the NUSU History room with eager cake decorators, excitement and festive music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Baking is more than just a way to bake delicious sweet and savoury treats, it\u2019s relaxing, enjoyable and allows your creativity to spread far between designs, scents and flavours. Nothing beats the smell of freshly made bread or soft and warm chocolate chip cookies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now for university students, baking can be a fun, cheap activity to input into your weekly schedule, become closer with flatmates or even just spend quality time with yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As through Newcastle University\u2019s extra-curriculars, anyone is warmly welcome to join the baking society, where they invite their attendees to take part in weekly bakes and social events such as trying out caf\u00e9 all around Newcastle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had the opportunity to chat with both the President of the baking society, Anastasia Decoster, and the Head of the CHS, Myca Lockhart where I was able to discover the ins and outs of this cake filled, charity raising party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Myca spoke about how the two societies \u2018hadn\u2019t collaborated before\u2019 but when they had their first conversation at the freshers\u2019 fair, \u2018they were really friendly, which made it an easy process\u2019 to work together. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The charities were chosen by voting on the day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The four charities chosen were \u2018Guide Dogs Uk\u2019<\/a>, \u2018Royal National Lifeboat Institution<\/a>\u2019, \u2018Mind<\/a>\u2019 and \u2018Feeding Families<\/a>\u2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The organisers of this events felt these were \u2018nice charities to help out\u2019 as for example student mental health with \u2018Mind\u2019 or the struggle of weekly food shops with \u2018Feeding Families\u2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Myca explained how the opportunity to do charity support best works well with food events as they \u2018do well\u2019, who doesn\u2019t love some cake decorating and sweet treats?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With lots of cakes to decorate and toppings to choose from this sweet afternoon was a great way to chill out, chat with friends whilst giving something back. During decorating a few bits myself, I was able to chat to Anastasia a little more about the baking society specifically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She explained how the society uses \u2018simple bakes\u2019 to welcome a wide range of attendees from avid bakers to newcomers, creating this inclusive and friendly environment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly, to further this inclusivity, the Instagram page is regularly uploaded with \u2018polls\u2019 to decide which bakes are next on the agenda. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, Anastasia added how popular the \u2018gingerbread cookies\u2019 were. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whilst baking events are the what the baking society is all about, other events such as caf\u00e9 socials are up on the list with previous meet up at the Dog and Scone caf\u00e9 near Bigg Market. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anastasia also mentioned they are hoping to \u2018try and do a bake off\u2019 so keep a look out for that over on their Instagram page!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overall, the charity voted was \u2018Feeding Families\u2019. Keep a look out for further events each of these societies do over on their Instagram accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
