Overview of National Refugee Data in the UK
According to the UK government, in the year ending March 2024, the UK received 69,298 asylum applications involving 86,719 people. Of these, 86,460 cases are still awaiting preliminary decisions, involving 118,329 people. During the same period, 68,564 people were granted refugee status or other forms of protection through their asylum applications. The main countries of origin of asylum seekers include Syria, Iran, Iraq, Sudan and Eritrea.

Impact of Action Foundation
In this context, Action Foundation plays an important role in providing necessary support to those in need. Action Foundation’s 2023 figures highlight their importance within the Newcastle community:
- 1,444 people were supported through our casework by more than 30 volunteers
- More than 700 people from 68 different countries received free English classes
- 24 destitute asylum seekers from 10 different countries were provided with supported accommodation
- 84 newly recognized refugees were supported, with 36 assisted in beginning independent living
