About Me

Welcome to The Wandering Report: the hub for students, by students, all about transforming the way you think about travel on a student budget!

My name is Sophie, I am 22 years old, and I am originally from Warrington, England. I am a second-year student at Newcastle University studying BA Journalism, Media and Culture. I have curated this news website as part of my Journalism for Digital Audiences module, and also to share my love of travelling… but most importantly, my love of travelling whilst still juggling my lectures and coffee-fuelled study sessions.

A travel sub-editor for The Courier newspaper, I am passionate about all things globetrotting. Whether it be solo travelling or volunteering projects abroad, I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to explore the world we live in when we can, and immerse themselves into different cultures. However, many groups of people find themselves without the means to- having to delay their flights and experiences for the foreseeable future, especially students waiting to see the world until they’ve hung up their cap and gown.

My motivation to continue to travel whilst studying was sparked last year after I spent two months working as an ESL tutor in Italy, and since then, I have solo travelled 8 countries whilst doing my degree, using term time breaks and low-budget experiences to my advantage- and in the summer of 2025, the bridge between my second and third year, I will be working a season over in the United States.

My goal for this website is to create a friendly space for travel and tourism news that suits university students, and share student-friendly travel ideas. Do you want to know more about why travelling whilst studying is important? Do you want to wring your wanderlust in between terms? Do you want to know more about how to travel on a student budget?

I’ve got you covered.
