The Tynemouth Outdoor Pool was built in 1925 and was a huge hit in its time, but it has since been abandoned, nearly a decade ago.
Friends of Tynemouth Outdoor Pool is a charity working to re-launch the pool and the project is still awaiting approval. But one of the core members of the group, Mr Michael Wood said, “We’re very confident about restarting this project,”

In addition to this, Mr Michael Wood introduced us to the imminent arrival of geothermal energy in outdoor swimming pools.
Mr Michael Wood said, “The use of geothermal energy will make this project fascinating, and the construction of this pool will not only allow intermediate and advanced students to learn more about geothermal energy, but it will also create job vacancies such as professional security guards, as well as baristas, senior office staff and more”
Meanwhile the Mayor of Sydney’s Waverley City Council, Paula Masselos, has expressed her support for the project and said in a video message, “The Tynemouth Outdoor Pool, like the Iceberg Pool at Bondi Beach, has weathered the storms of the last century but it still exists as one of Australia’s most recognisable tourist destinations. ”
Australia is not the only country that the Friends of Tynemouth Outdoor Pools have been in active contact with, they have also been in frequent contact with European countries such as Iceland, Spain and Italy, but so far only the Australian side has also given a positive response.
The project is expected to reopen between late 2026 and 2027 and the pool will explore the use of different membership models.

Steve Haigh, a resident from Tynemouth, said that although many people are sentimentally in favour of the redevelopment of the outdoor pool, he is pessimistic as he believes that in less than a year’s time the pool will be unused.
The proposal was supported by 1,894 members of the public on the council’s planning website, but ahead of the planning meeting on 4 July 2023 at 6pm, planning officers are still recommending refusal. Officers raised concerns about the temporary kiosk, the viability of external funding and the ecological impact.
