Use of Throwing Bags – “Water safety should not be underestimated”

According to World Health Organisation 2023, drowning has killed over 2.5 million people in the last decade, an average of 236,000 people a year. these figures are unbearably high, but can be avoided completely.

Water safety is the number one consideration for those of us who live by rivers and seasides, and the Tyne has replaced lifebuoys with throw bags, a key piece of equipment that has saved ten lives already.Below we follow Water Safety Lead – Tommy Richardson, from Byker Community Fire Station, to find out more about the throwing bag and how to use it.
