After being arrested in the drugs bust of a ‘well-established’ cannabis farm on Milburn Road, Ashington, 20 year-old Amenano Kurti from Albania was sentenced at Newcastle’s Moot Hall on Wednesday the 6th August.
Following his arrest on the 28th May for his role in maintaining a ‘well-established’ cannabis farm at a property on Milburn Road in Ashington, Mr Kurti pleaded guilty and has since been held in custody.
The court heard that the 63 plants growing in the property could have produced up to around 5kg of cannabis, worth up to £15,000.
Now, following his sentencing, Mr Kurti will be released in a short number of weeks, having served the majority of his sentence while in remand.
This comes as the number of residential cannabis farms in rented properties is becoming a growing problem for landlords.
In 2022, for example, figures showed that around 90% of the cannabis used in the UK was supplied from farms operating from rented homes.
Tom Wood reports from outside Moot Hall following Mr Kurti’s sentencing.
