Two leading Northeast theatres have credited social media marketing with helping them improve attendance at their performances – including reaching younger audiences.
According to Global Digital Reports 2024 released by Datareportal, in January 2024, social media users in the UK accounted for 82.8% of the total population, reaching 56.2 million. Among them, the number of social media users aged 15–34 reached 16.81 million, accounting for 24.8%. In light of these data, theatres across the UK are increasingly recognizing the importance of social media as a tool for engaging younger audiences.

Sarah Marsden, Creative Learning Officer at Sunderland Empire Theatre, shared insights into how her theatre is adapting to these changes. “Our marketing department has started using social media to attract younger audiences,” she explained.
Similarly, Anna Robinson, Customer Sales Supervisor at Northern Stage, highlighted the critical role social media plays in their outreach efforts.“We were over 50% capacity (across all three stages); we kind of almost sold out on both nights just through social media engagement.” she said.
The success of social media has been so great that the Sunderland Empire is considering starting a young influencers’ programme, Marsden said.
