Newcastle vs Northumbria Varsity Showdown Results in a Newcastle University Hockey Win

Ladies hockey teams from Newcastle University have achieved four victories in four games against Northumbria University. The teams relentless attack has secured them another clean sweep win in the annual rivalry. 

The varsity hockey games took place on the 26th March 2025 at Longbenton sports grounds and Coach Lane Sports Centre, with games at 1pm, 3pm and 5pm. 

The Ladies 4’s from Newcastle University and Northumbria University were the first pushback, in an exciting match resulting in a 12-0 win for Newcastle. The Newcastle ladies came out strong scoring their first goal within 10 minutes. This then led to a series of attacks from Newcastle, more often than not resulting in either penalty corners or goals. 

I spoke to Anna Buck, a 1st year Newcastle University student, who scored a total of 6 goals for Newcastle. I asked her how she felt about being the top goal scorer for the match.

“I’m feeling great, first and last goal of the season”.

Despite the challenging scoreboard, the Northumbria ladies 4’s remained determined and cheerful throughout the game. The girls continued to push through, and it was clear during the game that their positive attitude united and carried them to the end of the game, with cartwheels and laughter being observed in the quieter moments of the match. 

At 3pm, the ladies 1’s from Newcastle University and Northumbria University pushed back at Longbenton and the ladies 3s pushed back at Coach Lane. 

Newcastle ladies 1’s were up 4-1 after an excellent 35 minutes of game play. Their game ended on a 10-1 win for Newcastle ladies who worked well together as a team, present on both the attack and defence. Northumbria battled with force, earning their goal in the first half and keeping their heads up throughout, seeing them to a graceful defeat.

Over at Coach Lane, the Newcastle ladies 3’s beat Northumbria 12-0, and the game proved to be incredibly eventful, with multiple goals in the span of minutes and interesting position choices. With 15 minutes to go and a score of 12-0, Newcastle made the decision to take off their goalkeeper, Tasha Cubitt, and replace her with an additional outfield player. Tasha proceeded to take off her kit and play outfield as an attacking forward. 

Newcastle ladies 2’s played Northumbria ladies 2’s at 5pm in the final game of the day. The game was very tight throughout the first half, with very even possession from both sides. This resulted in a 0-0 draw at half time. Supporters from both sides crowded the side-lines throughout the game, full of passion and drive which further fuelled performance from both sides. In the second half, the umpires provided a warning to supporters who began appealing decisions and 2 green cards were presented to the Newcastle side over the span of the game. Both sides fought hard, however, Newcastle achieved a win of 4-0 after one disallowed goal, resulting in 4/4 wins for the Newcastle ladies hockey club.
