Northumbria’s ‘Evoke’ exhibition unites Newcastle’s art, music and fashion scene.

11/12/24

Northumbria’s Magazine society and Art society came together to collaborate for a night celebrating local art, fashion and music, at their annual party, this year titled; ‘Evoke’.

‘Evoke’ attracted a total of 110 attendees, comprising of students, representatives from local businesses and members of the general public, all coming together to celebrate and support local art.

Magsoc’s president Elise Waters, soon to be stepping down from the position, comments on the event;
“The feedback we received from both participants and attendees was overwhelming positive, and I couldn’t be happier with the turnout and energy of the evening. Coordinating my biggest event yet was a challenging yet deeply rewarding experience. I reaffirmed my passion for spotlighting emerging talent, as I truly believe the most exciting, boundary-pushing idea snare found within our small, local creative communities.”.
Elise worked closely, collaborating with the president of Northumbria’s Art Society Issy Everton to pull off the exhibition.

The event displayed the work of various local and student artists, including photography collections, poetry and video projections on the walls of the venue. Magsoc’s treasurer Amber Gaunt described the concept, “Evoke is a creative output for people to express themselves”, adding how she enjoyed the process of involvement with the artwork and models.

Following the option of drinks and food supplied by Acropolis, Evoke kicked off the night with musician Leviticus Phillips performing a selection of original songs, warming the audience up for the remainder of the night.

The venue held various stalls, attendees had the choice of creating bespoke jewelry, browsing Unique Magazine’s selection of alternative magazines and zines or even getting a flash tattoo, all within the walls of Tapyard Studios in Byker.

The art selection included a three thousand word poem overlaying Hieronymus Bosch’s ‘The Garden of Earthly Delights’ by student artist and Magsoc’s co-social secretary Chris. The piece was written during a dark time in the artist’s life, he used a heavy amount of religious imagery in the text and replaced real names in the poem with names of biblical figures.

A personal highlight was the selection of pieces shown in the fashion show midway through the evening. Ranging from paired back denim skirts and tailored England shirts to a mini dress comprised of patterned silk ties. The show was an examination of the classic white shirt in all it’s forms, models used the art exhibition as a runway and brought together all art forms shown during the night.

‘Evoke’ came to an end with local DJ Ellie Webster playing a selection of house tracks as the crowd dispersed and discussed the events of the night. It was a warm celebration of artists and creatives in Newcastle, giving students an opportunity to exhibit their work and socialise with likeminded creatives.
