Lets take a look at where university students in Newcastle like to get their coffee from.

Cafes are a prominent social and working space for students in Newcastle, serving as a casual place for people to pass time, grab a bite to eat or something to eat etc. There are so many options and locations worth visiting in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, so to help new students and residents find their soon to be favourite spots, I’ve asked other students what their café of choice is and what they like to order.
Flower café
Flower Café is situated on Grainger street, alongside a newer addition on Osborne road in Jesmond. Open from 9am-10pm Monday to Tuesday, 9am-11pm Wednesday to Sunday, and until 8pm on Sundays. They serve breakfast and brunch throughout the day, and in the evening serve alcoholic beverages too. Offering wide range of hot and cold drinks, Flower Café is a great place to suit all preferences, and has a great social atmosphere.

Bites, which is inside the Newcastle University dental/medical school, is a university run café, offering student discounts of 10% for those who have the ‘UPAY’ app, and once you’ve bought 9 coffees, get your 10th coffee free. Bites is a convenient option for students near the medical school of Newcastle University, for grabbing lunch between lectures perhaps when the commute back to accommodation is too long. Bites is open Monday to Friday during term time, from 8am to 3.30pm. Outside of term time they close thirty minutes earlier at 3pm.

Located on a small alley just off of market street, Laneway & co is the perfect place for a good coffee and nice food. It is a popular location for students and others doing work. Furthermore, it’s a lovely, calming atmosphere, with greenery and modern art pieces. Laneway & co also offer a wide variety of coffee beans, for those who make their coffee at home too. Ernest is an industrial stye café-bar in the top end of Ouseburn, around 30 minute walk from the centre of Newcastle, but convenient for students 2nd or 3rd year living in Heaton, Shieldfield and Ouseburn alike. They offer ‘seasonal dishes’, all day breakfast, and in the evening they serve alcoholic beverages and cocktails. Ernest café bar is open Monday to Thursday 10am to 11pm, Friday and Saturday 10am to 1am, and from 10am to 5pm on Sundays. Cafes as study spaces
Lots of university students use cafes a place to focus and crack down on their work, with food and drink to fuel your studies and minimal distractions that studying at home may offer. I interviewed an Economics student at Newcastle University about using cafes as study spaces, their convenience and asked him what places he would recommend to others looking for a welcoming place to study.
James says he thinks cafes are a good place to study, and are convenient for him in between lectures when he has shorter gaps and wants to avoid commuting back to his flat for short periods of time.
Book Club Coffee
Situated in the Newcastle city library, James enjoys going here to work as its, “got good food and drinks there, quite good prices. Its always quiet, which is nice when you’re trying to concentrate.. lots of space, good to go to with friends.”
Book club coffee is a good option for students wanting cheaper food and drink, James advises.

On Percy street across from Haymarket metro station, located near to Newcastle University main campus, which he says is, “great if you’ve got time to kill,” which cancels out any inconvenient travel times for students amidst lectures.

Lagom
Down a small alley behind the Gate in Newcastle centre, Lagom is a small café which James says there are often people working in, giving a welcoming environment for others wanting to do work too. James says its, “a little on the pricey side but the coffees are really good in there, its good quality coffee.”
