Short Film: I Went Seal Spotting For 7 Days

https://youtu.be/RnghDLXCgzU Alongside this video, I wanted to share a little more about what the Tynemouth Seal Hospital do to help sustain the Grey and Harbour seal populations across the north east coast. The hospital is an entirely volunteer run organisation, operating entirely off of donations with no outside government funding. Despite this, they have one of the highest re-release success rates of any seal rehabilitation centre down this coastline, with 70-80% of their seals being able to be reintroduced to the wild. Image provided by Alan Harrison Due to the lack of funding and resources available, there are currently only 5 spaces available at Tynemouth Seal Hospital. Any other injured or ill seals must be transpo...

4 Sustainable Cafés to Try in Newcastle

Tired of feeling guilty every time you shill out on an overpriced filter coffee? Or for always skipping the plant-based toasies in Starbucks - in your defense they are always soggy. If only there were a way that you could eat on-the-go both sustainably and deliciously, saving the planet and your friends from your hanger. COP Out or Step Up? Newcastle Rallies as COP29 Stalls

^ Newcastle Climate Day of Action rally. Image Credit: Keira Gratton November 16th marked the Global Day of Action for Climate Justice, coinciding this year with the 11-22nd Azerbaijan COP. Environmentalists across the UK rallied behind the conference, campaigning for greener policies and immediate action. What is COP? But let’s backtrack, what actually is a COP? An acronym loosely bandied around, the Conference of the Parties is the world’s most influential climate summit. In 1992 close to 200 countries signed an international treaty, The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, pledging to address the impacts of the climate crisis. They now attend COP, a yearly meeting where countries work towards the treaty’s goals. COP 29 so far… Arzu Aliyeva at World Le...

Why I Stopped Caring About My Carbon Footprint

^ Image credit: CDD20, Pixabay, CC0 1.0 As of 2024, I’m officially putting my foot down on tracking my carbon footprint. Now, that probably seems like a pretty ironic thing to read on an environmental blog. But, the idea of having a ‘carbon footprint’, or achieving carbon neutrality, doesn’t have the green beginnings you’d assume.   Like me, you probably first heard of a carbon footprint in school, or on one of the many apps which now features a carbon calculator. The term is defined by The Nature Conservancy as “the total amount of greenhouse gases (including carbon dioxide and methane) that are generated by our actions,” and is the most popular method of measuring our climate impact. It’s something that I was pretty concerned about for around a decade. Screengrab of Trai...
