Welcome to The Yard – your new go-to local news outlet for all things North East. Here at The Yard, we recognised a growing sense of audience dissatisfaction with modern approaches to local news. Pesky pop-ups and click-baiting headlines reflect local news’ increasing detachment from what makes it so important: local people.
We believe that local news outlets have a responsibility to cover the stories in our own backyard – the stories that matter, not the ones that will farm ‘clicks’ for the sake of revenue. And this is where the name comes from; ‘The Yard’ is a not-so-subtle nod to the rich shipbuilding heritage of the various towns that line the rivers Tyne and Wear, and the role of the yards in bringing our communities together.
It was also on the yards that working men and women would often catch up on the goings on of the day, with word of mouth turning break rooms and bait boxes into living, breathing newsrooms.
That is our mission: to inform and entertain the people of the North East, while putting them back at the heart of our stories. We hope you’ll join us in our ambition of reinvigorating local news in our region.
